My bun has a substantial case of dandruff with some minor hair loss on his ears the past couple days. I’ve read up on walking dandruff but it’s missing two of what I understand are some telltale signs:

        (1) I inspected his ears with a flashlight and found no evidence of “walking” or movement. Just stagnant dandruff.

        (2) I check his neck and upper back every day and there is no dandruff or hair loss there, which is supposed to be the primary infection spot for this mite.

Does anyone have experience with ear dandruff from other causes? In case it is relevant, the weather here has just turned quite hot. Bun is just starting a very light shedding all around.

        Thanks for your thoughts!

For the most part the presence of fur mites cannot be confirmed or denied by visual inspection. While the back of the neck is a common infection spot, it does not always start there. I think it would be worth getting double checked by a vet so that you can treat for mites.

Agreed with Az that going to vet is the best bet. While telltale signs are good to keep in mind, there are many exceptions.

Agree with the others. Only a vet can diagnos for sure but Ive had a bunny who always had really dry, flaky ears. Vet confirmed no mites. I used to brush the flakes off with a super soft baby brush and apply a tiny dab of mineral oil and gently massage in the dry areas.

My girl was in the vet multiple times, got checked for ear mites, had an earmite test done and always was negative, during a routine visit she readjusted herself with the earscope in and it showed a single ear mite wandering around in her ear.

The vet says its the weirdest thing she has ever seen-
I’d recommend going to the vet with your bunny, ear mites are uncomfortable, and if its not, it could be a skin problem that needs to be addressed before it gets worse

                  Thanks all!

I would still appreciate hearing stories of ear dandruff not related to mites from anyone with that experience so I can learn more.

Here’s the update: I was right in my diagnostic abilities insofar as it wasn’t walking dandruff (aka fur mites). Turns out it was ringworm. Whomp whaaa
