Well, I finally got a break and am able to post some pics of the English Angora girl and double-maned Lionhead boy that we rescued !
I’ll tell you first how this all came about………My husband ran in to this girl who worked at a local restaurant we like to go to and he was telling her about our bunns. She said she had a cousin that had an English Angora and Lionhead that she needed to get rid of and would just give them away. Seems she was wanting to get into showing them but there was a family conflict (divorce, I believe ?……who knows……), and she needed to unload them (I was immediately pissed off by that comment !).
Anyway, hubby didn’t want to tell me because he knew what I’d say……’Well, dammit, let’s go get ’em !!”, but to him ”the Inn was already full” ! So about a week later, after talking to “Autumn” at our local Sheetz, he decides to tell me about these two unwanted darlings and said the reason why he was telling me is because he had a “bad feeling” about them ! So I asked him if he had Autumn’s phone number and he didn’t, so we went to the restaurant she worked at, thinking she’d be there (she goes to school but works there in the evenings sometimes and on weekends), but we come to find out she quit ! Well, we couldn’t let that deter us because now I was getting a “bad feeling”, too, just because of how she said, “they needed to ‘unload’ them” !
So we asked the lady, Marie, at the bar, if she knew Autumn’s last name or her phone number because we needed to get a hold of her. Well we couldn’t find her in the phone book because there were umpteen million people with her same last name, so Marie went to see if they still had her info on file and, as luck would have it, they did !!!
Hubby called her, it was a Friday and snowing like a you-know-what, and had to leave a msg. She called him back within a half an hour (we were thinking that it was already too late and her cousin didn’t have them anymore because people in desperate situations like that will most likely not care who their animal goes to, just so they’re rid of them, know what I mean ?). But again, as luck would have it, her cousin still had them and wanted to get rid of them that evening !!
Now, these people live out in the boonies and it was snowing so bad and the roads were getting treacherous and we couldn’t imagine her wanting to drive all that way up here instead of waiting til the next day…….but evidently her cousin was adamant and wanted rid of them ASAP !!!
So we asked her if we needed to bring carriers because the only two carriers we had were at the vets because of two of our bunns being dropped off just that day to be altered, so we had nothing to transport them in ! She told us she would find some carriers and we could give them back later, so we were all set ! Actually she told hubby, originally, that they would come with all the “accessories”……meaning whatever she was housing them in, etc.
Well, of course with the weather, she was like a half hour late and I was so afraid something had happened to them but we didn’t want to call on her cell phone for obvious reasons, while she was driving.
Anyway, we knew what color vehicle she would be driving, but hubby was so dumbfounded when he found out she wanted to deliver them in that foul weather, that he couldn’t remember what kind of vehicle she would be in !! So of course every red vehicle that could possibly be in our area had to stop at the Sheetz for gas, etc., LOL !
Finally she showed up w/her cousin (very young girl, probly only in her mid-late teens !) and we got out to meet them. Here she told us they couldn’t find carriers for them and had them each in a cardboard box w/only enough room for their bodies !
The first pic is of the boxes they were in……..notice the wire that was put there as a half-assed way of holding a water bottle !
The second is a pic of “Mattie”, the Angora, beside the boxes so you can see how much room she had ! Horrible !!! The boxes were soaking wet and crummy from their excrements……..Lord knows how long they were kept in them ! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
The third pic is of Mattie herself…..she didn’t come with any papers, she didn’t even have a name , so we haven’t a clue how old he/she was or anything ! We couldn’t tell the sex because of how bad her poor little bum was ! You will see what I mean, but we finally found out it is a female and so we named her “Mattie” because she was nothing but a big matt when we got her ! If she would’ve been a male, it would’ve been “Matt”.
I have many more pics of her showing the condition of her coat & will post some after I’m done here…….
The fourth pic is what her bum looked like *sniffle* We had to stop at TSC after we picked up Mattie and “Shadow”, the Lionhead, because we were totally caught off guard being that she didn’t give us time to get them proper accomodations & while we were there, we told the one girl who has rabbits & works there, about what just happened and wondered if she could tell us exactly what sex Mattie was…….so she came out to the car and took her out of the box. Hubby & I were absolutely TRAUMATIZED at what we saw ! Her bottom was sooooo matted up and “gooey” that this girl couldn’t even see the genital area ! I mean, I don’t know how this poor thing could even go to the bathroom, there was such a gunked up mess ! I get teary-eyed just telling you all about it because I will never forget that as long as I live ! The poor, poor baby………*sniffle*
The fifth pic is another view of her bum while in the Xpen. We put her in there the next day before taking her to the vets and then to a groomers, so we could see if there were any other obvious problems (besides the major matting all over her, including her bum) that we needed to tell the vet about before taking her there. The only thing we could see was that she didn’t move around as well as our other buns……..and of course it was due to the blanket matting she had. It was so bad it was preventing her from even moving her feet very much to hop around !!
I will post some more pics in my next post…….some of her before and after her grooming. She actually had to be shaved ! Another traumatic experience we will never forget………..

Geez – I’m so glad you came to the rescue!
Well, I can’t seem to get the other 3 pics to post even though they are under 300kb !!
I even downsized them another 50% and they still won’t post !
Not a happy camper right now……..
Oh my! Poor poor rabbit – that is just not right! I know he must have been miserable – by the way is it a male or a female?
It’s a female, but we had to get her groomed before we could tell ! :o(
Here’s a couple more pics (if they post, that is !) of her matted-up coat before grooming. She has MAJOR matts around her poor little cheeks there and they were so dense I never seen or felt anything like it :o(

Oh MY GOD poor thing!! What is *wrong* with people??? That’s disgusting!!!
ARGHH!!! Poor dear!!
Good on you for taking them in! Keep us posted on how they are going!!
Oh, I love the darker colored ears – that is so unusual. I have a hard time with long haired rabbits – I’ve had a Jersey Woolie and a Fuzzy Lop before and I just wasn’t very proficient on the grooming but I love the looks of the long haired rabbits.
Here are a few “After” pics from getting her groomed. The poor groomer took 3 hrs. to shave her and had to keep changing the blade because it was getting so hot she didn’t want to burn her skin. She knicked the tip of her tail accidentally, too, because she just couldn’t find it…….that’s when I lost it and had to walk out because I couldn’t take anymore and broke down.
Hubby and I had to help hold her still while she tried grooming because she didn’t have any help that day. She came in on her day off just to do Mattie because she was an “emergency” (she really was). We are so grateful to her for being so gentle and kind with her. We had never been to her before and all the other groomers around here either weren’t “available” to do a rabbit or just told us that they didn’t do rabbits, period. So I took it as a blessing that all those other places didn’t want to do her because we’ve found a truly lovely person that has done rabbits before and actually had one as a pet at one time, so she knows all about them. Truly a blessing in disguise :o)
Here’s the “After” Mattie…….doesn’t quite look like the same bun, does she ? But I tell ya what……..she sure feels a LOT better and has now developed quite the ‘tude, thumping when she wants what she wants……. and, I believe I actually seen a tiny bink the other day !

What a beauty!!!!
She’s tiny under all that fur isn’t she! I’m glad you found someone to help groom her initially – she was an emergency.
I had a friend help me groom Linus, the Fuzzy Lop that I found a home for – it takes patience to do this and he was very matted too – he was well taken care of and loved by his former owner but she couldn’t keep up with his grooming either. It’s was actually a blessing we found him a home last year because my friend’s mother who had Linus passed away unexpectedly the beginning of this year.
sheesh like torture from guantanamo. poor buns goodness. how is the lionhead? I bet Mattie feels fantastic now. and that person was thinking of showing this bun? at one time I can see why she rethought her idea. ohhhhph I am so happy Mattie has a wonderful home now. I want an english angora too. but I can’t handle 3 so I won’t get 3. I know my limits. that poor rabbit I would like that person to be put in a small size thing liek they did on those chain gang movies a hole in the ground litterally jsut enuf for her body adn leave her in there. see how seh feels relieving herself on herself and having to stand in it and ruin her bum. now i know that poor rabbit was not groomed by that person. well no matter now the bun has a good home how fortunate good for bun keep us updated on your new darling
Thanks everyone ! I’m glad hubby told me about them because I shudder to think where they might be right now !
LOL, bunnytowne, you just crack me up !! But isn’t that the truth ? People never cease to amaze me at how inhumane they can be ! No one ever stops to think what it would be like to put yourself in an animals’ position ! I cry so much when I hear about animals being mistreated and can actually “feel” how they feel and it’s just heart-wrenching !!
Well, now that you’ve seen the “before” & “after” of Mattie…….here are pics of Shadow, the double-maned Lionhead, who has quite literally taken over our humble abode, LOL ! He is such a character & was none the worse for wear in this horrible situation, I’m happy to say ! He is one of the only bunns we have that actually plays with the grass ball that we purchased from BB. He digs at it, throws it up in the air & shoves his face down in it & it just cracks hubby and I up every time because he acts like he’s really trying to accomplish something, LMAO !
Here’s our little Lionhead rescue w/the big TUDE ! :o))

Oh how incredible you had the determination to get them! What horrible condition they were in. It just sickens me to think of how uncomfortable they must have been and how many others out there are in terrible conditons. You are a saint! I can’t wait for updates on how they are doing.
How cute!! They match!!
The angora with the different colored ears – just strange looking… very alien.
Wow, what a story! Congratulations and thanks for helping out these two babies. Most people have no clue what a commitment a long haired rabbit can be. They were lucky that you found them.
I know ! She does look a little strange with the different colored ears, doesn’t she ? LOL ! She’s actually the same color around the eye area as well. I tried looking up what color she might be when one of the forum members wanted to know if there were any sites that had all the breeds of rabbits & there were two sites posted……..I couldn’t find her color at either site :o( So, who knows ? Maybe she’s not a pure English Angora……I mean, we didn’t get any papers like we did with Shadow. She claimed Mattie was a full-blooded English Angora, and if she was planning on showing her, she would’ve had to have papers I would think………
The whole thing just doesn’t make any sense to me and probably never will, so I try not to think about and dwell on the condition she was in when we got her because she is enjoying life now and that’s all that matters :o))
I can’t wait for her fur to grow back……….it’s already starting to come in pretty nice :o)
Well, they do come in “broken” colors as well as solid colors – one of my rescue groups rescued 4 of them and the two females were white with brown spots if I remember correctly and I’m fairly certain they were purebreds. I think the different colored ears and around the eyes are very unique and lovely.
The “brokens” may not be accepted by the standards but they are still angora’s.
But your bunny just has points of color like on his ears – don’t know if that’s acceptable either – not that it matters :~)
Nope, it doesn’t matter, Sarita :o) ’cause she’s beautiful just the way she is ! Since she was so messed up when we got her, I couldn’t tell if she had any other colors in her fur or not…….like you said “spots”. I’m kinda thinkin’ she doesn’t, though, because the fur that’s growing in now doesn’t have any traces of other colors besides white.
My goodness, 4 of them rescued ! I can’t even imagine ! What shape were their coats in, do you remember ? How are they doing now ? I would absolutely LOVE to see pictures because I have really come to fall in love with the Angoras
Tami you saint, they’re gorgoues! I can’t wai t for updates and Mattie looks happier already. The poopy bum, well that is awful and the mats as well. There could be so many reasons for it, but lets just say that she’s in a much better place now.
awww so cute!! im glad you rescude her/him
bless your heart for rescuing those bun buns! they’re beautiful
What beautiful little buns those are!!! I’m soooo happy that you saved them, you are such a wonderful person to do something like that, and I think that ‘bad feeling’ you had meant that they were destined for something bad You are such a hero to save these buns! The pics of the shaved angora are the cutest! I love the shaved body and then the *POOOOF* head, hahaha. I know it was hard for you to watch, but she’ll feel much better once she’s able to have nice clean fluffy fur. I adopted a boy with pee mats all over, and it took weeks and weeks for them to grow out, so she would have been having a long of trouble with grooming and such if you hadn’t gotten the help with the shaving.
All my bun’s are doing a standing ovation for you!!
Awwww you guys……..I really didn’t do anything any of you wouldn’t have done since we are all bunny lovers here :o)) Hubby just happened to be in the right place at the right time & it was “meant to be”.
I just wish he would’ve told me sooner to alleviate the extra days the poor things had to spend with that girl, but it all turned out well & we are very happy and feel blessed that these two Angels have graced us with their presence :o)
Our hearts are truly overflowing
Actually ,Tami, we each do our own part. I often feel overwhelmed by the praises I receive here – especially when people come to me for advice about bonding and I have only done it once – with a pair that I couldn’t even bond completely by myself.
Some people can dedicate their time to shelters, some can adopt special need buns other can go out of their way to rescue buns while others can suddenly take on a new bun family. We all have our moments and our abilities. This is yours and feel blessed that the buns have found you too.
