Trying to find transportation help??

Okay. I am new to this forum and I don't know if this post will be allowed, but I feel compelled to try. For starters, I am not trying to rehome my own bunnies. Nor am I posting any links to a Craigslist ad on behalf of someone else trying to rehome their bunny. However, the person who brought this situation works with a bunny rescue in Tennessee (I forget the name) and they are full, so she has been asking for help on Facebook.

Here's the gist of it: a 2-year-old, unspayed female Lionhead/Dutch bunny named Rosie is in urgent need of a home. Her family is unwilling to get her spayed and no longer have an interest in keeping her (my understanding is they travel a lot, the husband wasn't crazy about having a pet to begin with, and now the daughter is going away to college). They have said that they will leave her at the local shelter this Monday if no one can find her a home before then.

Rosie is in Hillsboro, Alabama. I live in Atlanta and could potentially help with a portion of transportation, but my own girl bun is EXTREMELY territorial (I had to stop volunteering at my local rabbit rescue because she was so distressed when I got home, even after I showered and changed clothes), so I could not take her far or keep her for long. I also live in a tiny 1-bedroom apartment so I could not even take her in temporarily.

There is a sweet lady in Florida who would like to take her, but she is unable to drive for health reasons and it would be an 11-hour trek to get Rosie to her. (Also, to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure she is totally equipped to care for Rosie.) So if someone could either help with some kind of transport chain OR, better yet, if someone else who can drive could take her, that would be incredible.

Yes, the shelter has said they will take her in. But can you imagine her chances at a county shelter in small-town Alabama?? Not good!

Again, I don't know if this post is allowed but I have tried contacting every rescue I know of in the area and none of them can take her (and, again, the person who originally told me about this works with a rescue herself and already has 7 buns of her own, so she can't take Rosie either).

Please help if you can!!! Rosie's family has been told repeatedly about the importance of spaying, the dire outlook for bunnies at a county shelter, and the importance of taking the time to find her a good home. They don't care. So please don't comment with what you think should have been said to the family, or how else we could convince them to keep her. If they want her gone badly enough that they are willing to dump her at a shelter instead of taking the time to find her a good home, they are not going to change their minds.

It's a tragic situation and Rosie is a beautiful girl. ANY help whatsoever would be very much appreciated!!!

ETA: I forgot to mention that the original poster has also tried asking for help at the Bunderground, and I have tried all the bunny forums and Facebook groups I know of.

I am going to move this thread to the “Rescue Section” of our site. That’s really where this topic belongs.

As far as your situation, I’m not sure if anyone will be able to help here. A reason you might not be getting responses from rescues is that they will usually only take “11th hour” rabbits directly from shelters, not personal surrenders. So if that is how your local rescues operate, her being relinquished to the shelter really might not be the worst thing to happen. Will the shelter list her online as ‘adoptable’?

Did a quick search…
There are four shelters in Alabama that take rabbits incl the Ferret rescue… If they are unable to take the bunny in they may be able to assist with transport. Scroll down the page till you get to Other States.
