Trouble caused by a chew toy

Hi all,

Yesterday, we gave the buns some special chew toys – fruit flavored chews and some flavored loofah bites. Backers enthusiastically wolfed down a loofah bite.

However, about 10 minutes after eating, he began acting uncomfortable. This continued, stretching out his tummy and fidgeting. I moved him to the cool bedroom (our living room ac died yesterday) and began simethicone, ibuprofen (based on the medirabbit dosage) fluids and tummy rubs. He seems to be peeing, but no poops. This started around 7p Saturday evening.

It’s now almost 5a and still no poops. No vets open today and the nearest emergency vet is over an hour away. He is already stressed from all the handling.

He is still very feisty and cranky, which is good.

Has anyone had any experience with a toy blockage? Or anything like this? Is there anything else I can do to move his tummy along?

He still feels squishy and I hear tummy gurgling.

I’d continue the simethicone and give water via syringe. Hydration is key. If he will drink more with a bit of apple juice or other juice added to his water bowl, give him that. Give him plain water as well, in case he wont drink water that tastes “funny”.

Also try and make him move around. You can try and elevate his butt a little bit now and then to help him pass gas.

A gut motility drug is not recommended if you suspect a blockage. Moving around will help set the intestines in motion. It is excellent that you hear tummy sounds and that his tummy is squishy!

Do you have any critical care or a pet store in the area where you can get some? I’m not sure if it would help in the case of a blockage but it came on so fast I’m wondering if it caused gas, like you’re treating for, and if that’s the case then it would help keep his git moving until he’s no longer uncomfortable and feels like eating.

This morning when I got up, he is acting much better. He ate a couple dried strawberries and some lettuce. He also took a nice long wash. He hasnt gotten into the hay I left for him.

Still no poops that I see though. I will try to get him moving around though and continue the simethicone.

I added some pineapple juice to his water syringes. The vet had told me a long time ago that unfiltered pineapple juice works great because of the fiber content. I also made a pellet slurry to syringe him as well.

Hopefully he is on the mend, though. 🙂

WE HAVE POOPS!!

Phew, I think crisis averted. I gave him another round of simethicone, then he proceeded to destroy a towel in tiny rage lol. I’m pretty sure he was imagining my face as he tore holes in the towel lol.

Shortly after, there were normal poops! He is now happily reunited with Hazel and out and about again.

Glad to hear he is doing better! He probably just had gas, perhaps from swallowing too much loofah?

@LBJ10 – I honestly think he snarfed it down so quickly, that it just didn’t go down right. He is bad about wolfing down his treat, then stealing Hazel’s from her mouth lol. He is a piglet.
