How often does everybody trim their bunnies’ nails?  I do it probably ever 3 months or so, and its always a big production for everyone involved!  Does anyone have any tips!?

I am a wimp when it comes to doing their nails.  I’d say 3-4 months is the usual time frame for us.  In the past I have taken the buns to a Rabbit Haven event and let Auntie Heather do their nails, but last week I decided that I had to learn how to do it myself.  I can trim other bunnies nails (not my own) by flipping them upside down and holding them between my legs, but my guys will not stay still.  What worked great was my daughter held the buns and I did the nails.  They were much calmer this way.  Two of our three have black nails, so I am paranoid about hitting a vein when I do the nails.

I’ve been trying to do Pepper’s once a month or so.  Hers were neglected and the quicks are really long, so I can only get a little off at a time.  With more frequent trimming this should sort itself out.

Frisco is getting his first trim from me tonight – wish me luck!

I do Sophie’s once a month or so. I try to do it very non-chalantly. I”ll be watching tv, she’ll be running around, I’ll just scoop her up, bunny burrito her unsuspecting butt and start on a front paw. The back nails are always the worst, but I get her tranced and tell her that beauty is pain and mommy’s almost done and anything else i can think of in that nice, sweet low, reassuring voice. Then, she gets some banana and mommy’s forgiven!!!

Ideally it should be every 4 – 8 weeks.

I generally like to bunny burrito and sneak out each paw for trimming.  it seems like if they can’t see it, they’re less stressed about it.  the bunny on their back works really well at the shows, but i haven’t tried it at home. i usually give a lil bite of treat as each paw is finished.

Hareiette get so angry that she actually FIRED me as her manicurist! The last time i trimmed her nails she bit me hard, just to be a brat. So, we take them ito haven adoption shows for nail trimmings. I figure it’s better for them to be mad at someone else besides me, lol.

Hey Osprey, do you know the flashlight trick for the black nails???? You just take a flashlight and shine it behind the nail *on the curved side* and it should show you where the quick is and how much growth you can take off.

Though I do check them every month, they usually need a trim by 2 months.

Jack REALLY hates it and it stresses him out.   I usually cover his eyes and that does help him calm down.  You can see the methods of poor pathetic torture at https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/MonthlyMaintenance/tabid/64/Default.aspx and then scroll down to nails.

I’ve also attached a picture of what seems to keep him most calm.
