trimming nails

I have always been a do it myself with my pets. nail trims or feather trims. no more birds !!! messy.  I used to have a lot of them. . so last nite I decided to trim cotton’s nails  I put it off for a while cuz I didn’t want him mad at me. well I had to get a towel and put him on his back and stroke him and trim a foot when he got nervous I have to stop and stroke him and talk to him. he will try to get away so I stop for a bit. worked out really really well. was over b4 he knew it. and i didn’t cut a nail too short either wow great. phew. I had the strypic powder jsut in case he got his papaya tablets as a treat. oh boy. yes he is spoiled. then was time for his pettings n lovins my hubby must be jealous now ahaaa. gosh buns just gotta love em   hubby loves him too. cotton won’t let hubby pet him tho heheeee he runs. he can pet him a few seconds then when cotton realizes I moved my hand away and hubby is petting him off he goes zoom. oh well. I always had a way with animals. had horse too few years ago. broke him in and he was very intelligent aren’t they great horses. had back surgery so my horse days are over.

aww i havent had to trim hopscotchs nails yet as they arent long enough to be cut but i have always done my own dogs nails my bunny likes to follow darren around and darren acts as if he hates it but really he loves it and is always slipping him healthy treats when he thinks no-one is looking hehe isnt it funny how some people just take to animals? aww

I do Holly’s nails. It took her a week to become totally normal again. The first couple of nights, she would just come for head pats. In the middle of the week she would timidly come up to me. Then my the weekend, I had my Holly back. I too haven’t cut it too short yet. I’d hate for that to happen.

Maryann is a terror when it comes to nail trimmings. I’ve tried everything under the sun. We just get into a wrestling match over the dew claws and deal with it. By the time I’m done, I’m completely covered in bunny fur (moreso than normal) and she’s off like a shot.

I’ve actually clipped one of her nails too close once and it bled. A quick dab of the powder fixed it right up. So, just as an fyi, it isn’t a big deal as she didn’t go squealing or kicking or anything. Just the usual body squirm but you can handle them and get the powder on.

I HATE trimming bunny nails!  My husband hates me doing it too.  Either I don’t cut it short enough or I cut it too short.  Jessica freaks out every time.  I’m a  real pro w/ cat nail trims…but bunnies….I just can’t do it well at all.  I find cleaning out the scent glands way easier!

BunnyTowne – good for you! Congratulations! Jack is very difficult, I have to trim quickly, otherwise I am at risk for a scratch fest. He NEVER bites, but he’ll give a nice pinch of a bite during nail trims.

Oh the joys of nail trimming!

I do Luey’s nails outside …. easier for me and him … I used to do them inside … put a towel over him and hunker over him and prise a foot out one at a time … but outside works better for me.

Have you ever tried to trim piggies nails.  I find that much harder …. squirmy little Tyson is a real pain … anyone would think I am trying to kill him.  My other piggy is much easier to do.

I do it that way. Cover pepper with a towel and pull one leg out at a time.  I hate it.  I have no idea if I’m close to the quick because she has black nails, so I have no idea if I’m cutting them short enough.

lornatrae – use the flashlight trick to highlight the quick of dark nails. If you are by yourself, get a little thin flashlight that you can hold under your chin and focus the light that way.

Just a note, if you cut them too short, cornstarch will stop the blood. I always make sure to have some around the house.

Hi Binkybunny, I’m usually doing it alone. I’ve tried the flash light but it seems impossible, Pepper won’t go on her back so I have to do it with her sitting on my lap. Still haven’t ever seen a quick yet.

If you keep up on regular trims…they develop a slight indentation where the trim should occur.  I’ve noticed this w/ the cats and found it’s true for the bunnies too.  I have black nails too.  I have tried the flashlight but I’m just not coordinated enough.  In order to get myself into the nail trims w/ cats I forced myself to trim just the knub every other day.  That way I didn’t trim too much and could “train” the nail more.  I’ve tried this w/ the rabbits, but they are not as cooperative! Binky, could you explain that to them for me ?

See for me, trimming my guinea pigs nails was always easy…I’d wrap them in a towel and flip them upside down, then give them a big leaf of lettuce….
and they’d angrily eat while I did their nails-easy as pie!!

Bunnies, well Kokanee is very difficult-it is an absolute OFFENSE to flip her upside down and clip nails!!

I have my hubby help with nail trims- cat, dog, bunny, etc.  The thing that I hate about it is since I work at a vet clinic I am trained in how to hold squirmy pets, etc.  AND I am confident in trimming.  But I can’t do both at the same time.  He does not want to trim- so he elects to hold.  But he holds them as if he would rather be ANYWHERE else- drives me crazy.  If he would just be firm yet gentle and listen to me- it would be over in half the time!!!!

My parrot dislikes him so I have to take him to work with me to have nails and wings done.  I have other people at work do it so I am not involved in it at all.  Parrots are not like dogs that just shake it off and get over it- they remember!!!

It is funny how a problem animal at home can be a prefect angel at the vets for a trim- they expect the vet to do these “awful” things to them and are probably thankful that it was “just” a trim.  Where are home- Mom’s (and Dad’s) are NOT supposed to do that kind of stuff to them- it goes against their demand for daily worship!

How do you manage to clip Kokanee’s nails?  How regularly should you do it?  Is clipping a tiny bit every other day too much?
