I was trimming the nails of one of the shelter bunnies and I noticed that their dew claw is about 3/4 of the way to forming a complete circle. None of my bunnies dew claws are curving like that.

How do I fix the overgrown dew claw?

I think just trim it more often. Buttercup’s dew claw on one paw grows quicker than the rest.

Will that solve the problem of it curling in a circle? I’m fairly certain the dew claw isn’t supposed to do that. And an unrelated question but what is the purpose of the dew claw?

It’s curling because it’s grown in excess, so yes, continuing to trim it will lead it to be more straight, because the nail will no longer be around the length in which it starts to rotate into a circle.

The quick may be further along than usual, so this means more frequent trimmings so the quick retreats gradually.

In some instances of running or climbing, the dew claws will actually touch the ground, so it’s there as an aid, as well as to help rotate things in the rabbit’s paws.

I hate trimming dewclaws. I feel like I’m upside down trying to see the stupid thing. LOL I agree with the others. Just keep trimming it back. You should see a change in it’s growth pattern.

You and me both LBJ, the dew claw is so tough to get to on rabbits.

I agree that trimming it up will prevent the circular growth, it’s only in a circle due to being overgrown.

Hate those little claws too! Especially on hairy toed buns. Bindi’s were always a nightmare. I haven’t been brave enough to do Elara’s yet. I’d rather pay for her to beat up the vet.
