We’re taking a lengthy camping trip this summer,
and I’m considering taking our two Lops with us.
Has anyone done this? Any advice? Or is this a
horrible idea? ? We would mostly be in areas and
doing things that we could just bring them a long,
but there may be a time or two we would need to
leave them for a short period in our air conditioned
        camper.

I’ll take any advice I can get! Even if it’s just “don’t
do it!” I realize bunnies can be finicky and fragile,
so we would start prepping them for it way ahead
of time with short car rides and weekends away and
        such.

Hi there, I have never personally done this, but that is just because my rabbit hates car rides. So, it really just depends on your individual rabbits because I know some rabbits that love cars rides and many that don’t. Also, you said it was lengthy, which is fine as long as they have space to stretch their legs daily. I would also advise you to look ahead of time for exotics vets in the areas that you are visiting just in case anything happens.
          Hope this helps. Good Luck!

My bunnies would find that very stressful, but I guess it depends on the bun. Bunnies are creatures of routine though, so I can’t imagine any bunny actually ‘enjoying’ something like that, more like tolerating.

When you say doing things that you could just bring them along to, what do you mean? Walks? It sounds quite risky to be honest.

You also need to consider whether there would be vets available, should they either get stasis from the stress, or should an accident happen in a strange environment.

What would the rabbit’s setup look like when you were traveling? how far of a drive?

I know of someone who lives in an RV and does quite a bit of traveling. He has a rabbit that lives in the RV. When they are not moving, the bun is free roam in the whole camper van. He has a setup in back/trunk (not enclosed) with all his food, dishes, etc. This area can be secured for travel and he stays back there when they are driving.

That said, this rabbit is used to the set-up and has known it all his life. It would probably be stressful on two regular sedentary buns. You should keep in mind whether they can be kept safe and comfy on the trip. And it would be best not to drive far, most buns don’t eat when in a moving vehicle.

We have a trailer camper, they’d likely be in a large cage at night (much like how things are at home – we don’t let them roam when we’re sleeping). We’ll be getting a portable enclosed playpen for outside, and they’ll roam in the camper when we’re in there. We’ll be hanging out at campgrounds a lot – likely every other day will be a “down” day. Other than that, lots of visiting national parks and stopping for picnics…that type of thing.

I bring my bunny on a road trip home which is about 8 hours. She did ok in the car. Idk about a long term camping thing though, I would worry about predators and exposure to diseases, etc that they don’t encounter while in the safety of your home. I agree that I think this might be too stressful

Oh my gosh, when I first saw your bunnies I thought it was a picture of mine! Too cute!

I’m also a little concerned about the buns being exposed to diseases/parasites outdoors, especially because it sounds like you’ll be traveling to several different locations. Maybe ask your vet what he/she thinks about the idea?

My bun seems to get carsick. Even after 20 minutes in the car he’s not interested in treats. OTOH some buns don’t seem to mind cars. Maybe a day trip would give you a better idea how they would react.
