Asking this in a separate thread in case you guys have any input.

Thor’s been going through an episode of stasis. She came home from the vet yesterday (yay!) but she’s still pretty sick and is getting critical care feedings and gut motility meds until she is eating better. That seems common, but she was also prescribed TraMADol for pain, which is an opiate. I’ve been giving it to her, but I guess I’m just a bit wary of the side effects – aren’t some side effects of opioids nausea and constipation? That seems like the opposite of what we want.

Anyone else been given something similar?

Hi! Tramadol isn’t an opioid to my knowledge. Buprenorphine (sub q) is, but I may be wrong on tramadol.

My buns have had tramadol for pain and it didn’t work for them. Tramadol can often cause drowsiness. Have you been given meloxicam before? Buprenorphine is also a great drug for pain but it can cause extreme drowsiness(my girls do bad on it). Also, gabapentin is an amazing drug for gi pain! Mine have been on it for it and it had the buprenorphine pain relief without the side effects!

Tramadol is an opioid. It can be given for pain, it’s bunny safe ccording to Medirabbit http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Analgesics/safe_analgesics.htm

It’s more powerful than Metacam and less hard on the stomach lining. But as you are saying, it can cause gut slowdown. A vet has to weigh the pros and cons.

I found this. “Adequate analgesia is imperative, since rabbits are prey animals whose physiology has not evolved to withstand significant pain. Many practitioners have used NSAIDs successfully, but this is becoming more controversial in cases of ileus when other modes of analgesia are available. I prefer to use buprenorphine to ensure adequate analgesia, and will often send the rabbit home on Tramadol if discomfort is still present. Antibiotics for anaerobes may be indicated especially if significant gas is present, and over-the-counter simethicone may be given to increase comfort.”

I know of one bunny that just recently had tramadol for bad tooth pain. It seemed to help him, Metacam was not enough to give him adequate pain relief. He wasn’t in stasis though, just empty because he couldn’t eat properly. He also had motility drugs and he did poop eventually, after having eaten properly. So that story is different.
