Hey there! Sorry it’s my first post. I’ve been picking around looking for an answer, but the search engine is off. I am adopting two bunnies in two weeks from a rescue. I know a lot of people use tractor supply equine pine pellets. These: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb?cm_vc=-10005 but I went in to purchase some and they had a strong smell. What are the additives that are dangerous to rabbits? Does anyone know? The packaging doesn’t state if these are kiln dried and I asked an employee who couldn’t answer or give a contact number. Thanks in advance!

I think that most if not all pine pellets have been kiln dried, so they are safe to use. Pine pellets do have a strong smell, it’s not just these equine pellets. Feline Pine pellets are also very strong smelling. Aspen pellets have a strong scent too. The smell will dissipate some once they are out of the bag and spread into a litter box, but you will still be able to smell them. I use aspen pellets covered with a little Carefresh paper bedding/litter. I think it’s softer on my rabbits’ feet and it suppresses the aspen scent somewhat.

Tobyluv is correct, in the process of making pellets they are kiln dried. Kiln drying removes harmful phenols from the timber and means it’s safe to use. I open my bags of wood pellets into a storage bin. I find the by the time I’ve emptied them into there and then scooped them into the tray, there’s hardly any smell from the pellets at all.

Thank you! I’ll be putting them in a storage bin today. Hopefully it helps.

Those pellets are the only solution I can find to help suppress my bunnies pee (New Zealand is a a heavy pee-er and is very cheap compared to paper litter) and basically take the smell away, so good choice in buying them!

I’ve used it before and had it okay by my vet She said it’s fine especially because it’s only used in the litterbox and not under an entire cage. I find it’s pretty good at absorbing urine but not as great with odor control as yesterday’s news. Jake & Yulie also refuse to use separate litter boxes even though I provide them so they “pee it up” pretty quickly, lol!

I’ve been meaning to try Tractor Supply pellets for quite a while, since Carefresh, even when I buy it through Friends of Rabbits’ supply shop, can be pricey ($20 for plain bedding; I usually get confetti-colored bedding which can run $26 plus tax unless there’s a sale on). Panda and Fernando customarily pee only on one side of their litterbox, in fact in one specific area, to the extent that I can tell pretty much exactly where they’re doing their business when I empty the box. The good thing about that is that I’m usually able to recover some hay that wasn’t soiled and recycle it.
