Toys: what to try next

I have been trying out toys on Sammykins, and she doesn’t seem to take to them. I got her a cute little flat animal stuffed thing that was safe for dogs, about as big as she is, and she has totally ignored it. Not cuddly or fuzzy though.

I got her a baby blankie, very soft. Ho Hum. Played in it one day I think.

I got her some wooden bunny safe discs and colored wilow mini bakks, with a bell on a ring – she tore it up in five minutes, Completely fell apart, and now she ignores the pieces.

I got her a whiffle ball with a bell. Nothing. A wooden bunny with a wood stick that’s small enough for her to pick up. Nothing.

She has only a passing interest in her timothy hidey hole and her hay ball. Even her willow sticks lay around after a few bites.

What should I try? I think she’s holding out for a convertible and her own credit cards…

How about the ol’ reliable cardboard boxes? My buns like it when I cut a little flap into the side of the box and fold it out… they can pull on the box that way, or chew on it til it’s big enough for them to squeeze through.

Cardboard boxes are the only thing that work for me. Sometimes my buns get fresh willow branches and they enjoy destroying those. Other than that they are also completely uninterested in toys. I feel like I’m responsible for them being bored all day bit the truth is they love running, playing, jumping and chewing more than anything so they’re happy with a few boxes and space to play chasey.

Cardboard boxes are the way to go I think. Puddles chews and rips them apart. He also loves to hide in them. The only other things he is really interested in are a cat tunnel and those baby rings that hook together. he lokes to move them around.
I don’t know how much $ I have spent hoping to find just the right toy

what about a slinky?  My bunnies love to try to “toss” them.  Or apple sticks to chew on?

Ditto on the cardboard box. Remember, they like two entrances/exits or they likely won’t go in there. With four boxes and some glue you can make a two story duplex!

Then match toys to that. What’s her primary activity while she’s out and about?

K&K, I’ve been trying to pin point her preferences. So far, sort of like Spockie, she likes sitting at my feet the best and licking them and getting head pets!
When she moves away, she seems to stay in the room I’m in, or just venture into the next room. She occasionally does binkies and bunny 500s.
She noses around her outside litter pan looking for something tasty.
She nibbles on wood (rocking chair feet) and molding (paint! Ugh. Gets scolded and shoo-ed away.) She hides behind the door, between the door jamb and wall and peeks out.
She did go in and out the NIC cube box once I emptied it. One evening. Never since.
She digs a little in her outer litter pan, and picked it up with her teeth. I do have a big basket with plain newsprint paper I saved from my move, that she ignored earlier but I could try it again now that she’s older.

But she doesn’t have any interest in the wood chew toy, finished shredding a seagrass matte, and never went back to a willow ring.
And she hated the Hairbuster comb. So that will wait until she starts shedding.
She ran around with two pieces of fabric tied together for a few weeks, but ignored the fabric I wove through her willow tunnel like a jellyfish toy.

The last 2 days she’s let me pick her up for cuddles again. Less than a minute, but likes getting pets and kisses.

(I went through this with Spockie, who only liked my slippers, my dad’s shoelaces, and reruns of West Wing.)

I’m going to try a slinky. I threw out most of the good moving boxes – duh – but will try to find one to empty and make two openings for her to go through.

I’m having the same problem with Nixon, he won’t play with anything! When he’s in his cage he just flops all day, I don’t think he barely moves. And when he’s out he likes to stretch out under the couch, or if I’m sitting on the couch he likes to sit beside me. Other than that, he doesn’t do much of anything . Occassionally he’ll get a burst of energy and run from one end of the room to the other, but then he’s tired. He’s so lazy! Once in a while he’ll toss a toilet paper roll or re-arrange the cushions on the couch. I try to give him boxes to play in- no dice. Grass mats, hay balls, paper bags with treats and hay- nope, nope, nope. He’s more content to just be lazy.. oh, and demand head pets and treats. Sighhh.

Jersey has never really taken to anything I’ve offered or made for her. She will find her own entertainment from time to time, sometimes it’s ok, others it not – ie chewing things don’t want chewed etc. Maybe Sammy is just not into toys. She just may be content in your company or snoozing somewhere.

I find Jers likes to go at unpacked boxes sometimes, as they’re weighted down, or pulling at carpet. I think she, and most bunnies like to try their teeth on things that are fixed down so they can really gain purchase on the floor and pull at it. Where as chew toys etc are more likely nibbled and tossed about. For my girl, I’m thinking getting a board for the floor and fixing down peices of wood, sea grass, chew toys etc and see if she takes to that. Sort af a Chew/Scratch/Dig Station.

Mimzy is not a player. (lolz…that sounds weird) He is what I call my “zen bun”. He just likes flopping around and in general just finds a quiet place to be and is happy with that. The only toy he seems to like in his pen is a plush carrot I found at PETCO. But he doesn’t play with it, he uses it as a pillow.
Maybe Herself would like one of those collapsible ferret tunnels made of cloth? Or a large enough cardboard tube to run through/hide in?
Um…did you try a slipper? ^_^ I have quite a few sets of bunny slippers up here, maybe I should send you a set. She can carry one around and (she’s probably small enough to) maybe hide in the other one?

Since you do work and she can only interact with you when you get home, I think she thinks that YOU are her toy. ^_^

Try plastic (human) baby teething toys. Before we got our bun we read in a bun care book that they can be a great bun toy, and as it turns out, it is by far our bun’s favorite toy. He plays with all the time and rarely touches his made for bun toys. Since you can find them easily at target/walmart for a few bucks it’s worth a try!

I always check out the bird section for bunny toys. They sell cardboard hoops, wicker balls, hardwood toys, plastic tossing toys, and they are safe to chew because they are made for parrots to chew on. Just stay away afrom the other materials in bird toys like leather or cuddle bones.
