Towels?

I was wondering it it is safe to keep a towel in the cage because I currently have a towel in there and my bunnies seem to like cuddling up with it. I was wondering it they would get sick if they chew it up?

It they ate a tiny bit it wouldn’t hurt.  It would be fine unless they eat a lot of it. Sometimes they will chew on it and spit out the pieces.

Rose’s favorite toy is a tie between a towel and her diggy box. Both fun to take her frustration out on lol. Lucky she hasnt seriously eaten any of it, otherwise id get the stink eye for a week lol for taking it away.

I was asking because the foster parent said not to but it seemed cold where they were so I put the towel there to see if they would chew it up or not and it seems like they didn’t i dont really know. Do certain breeds chew up stuff more then others?

Towels are O.K. since they are usually 100% cotten and if ingested will generally pass through the GI tract without too much trouble. If, however the rabbit is eating too much, then it is best to take it (most rabbits do not have this problem). The local HRS shelter by me uses towels to line the bottoms of the cages to provide traction.

No i dont think any breeds have certain chewing/destroying traits. All just depends on personality, which they have lots of lol

We have one towel for the floor and the other one for them to cuddle in one of the bunnies like it alot

The shelter that I used to volunteer with also used towels without much of a problem. There would be a few drastic chewers so they couldn’t use them, and sometimes the towels would get larger holes in them, and if a bunny chews a large hole in one then you shouldn’t use it because a limb could get stuck or the towel can get twisted around on it.    Also, just one other thing to keep an eye on IF they are diggers – The terry part of it…sometimes when a bunny digs on that it can pull out little loops of string, so you just want to be careful that there is nothing that a bunny can snag their toenail on.

So if your bunny does just some minimal chewing, but more or less just hangs out on it, then it should be a big deal

Also, the foster mom may have tried towels already and maybe they caused a problem so it might be a good idea to double check and ask about alternatives that worked for her.

I use a soft fleesy stuff – the kind that you can find on soft pullovers. I go the fabric store and can get a bunch for much cheaper. However, my bunnies are not chewers and not all fleese is cotton.

She said no blankets either but I can use paper towels so I’ll just use those

Did she give a reason why? Were your bunnies digger and/or chewers?

When you did have the on the towel, were they going at it?

Paper towels don’t sound so comfy.   How’s that working out? 

It  looks like you are sort of between a rock and a hard   place trying to do what is best for your bunnies. 

hmmmm….I’m thinking….thinking….”ouch”…..still thinking.  What else could you use for bedding if not blankets or towels….hmmm……you could get a cardboard box and put carefresh (very soft) litter inside.  They MAY use it as a litterbox, but if they don’t, it could be a compfy warm bed.
Just trying to throw some ideas out there if you prefer to stay away from blankets and towels.

Yea. I’ll just use care fresh because they just let the paper towel sit there. Ill need to add siding on my cage so the bedding doesnt go everywhere

I hate to suggest spending money, but I bought a “Cuddle Cup” for my baby and she loves it. It never gets chewed, but she can sit or snuggle in it if she wants to.

i use some leftover baby blankets from my son. one is a knit material that they sometimes chew little pinholes in, but no major chewing… another is a soft flannel blanket that does not have long enough fibers to be a danger if they dig on it. just recently i put my son’s old quilted comforter from his toddler bed in their pen. they love to lay on it but that one they will not dig or chew at all. i have a mini rex and she had mild chronic sore hocks, so it helps in her case especially to have soft material that she can rest on. some buns like soft materials, some don’t. as long as they’re not ridiculous chewers, it doesn’t hurt to have one in there. some will lay on them, some will bunch and shove them out of their way. the bunching, digging and pushing can be viewed as another way bunnies “play” so i wouldn’t automatically assume that the bunching and moving means that they hate it and want it out.

So true-if you watch my Chuck playing with his blankies and towels you’d think he were punishing them-looks very angry LOL But then he flops on them and snuggles up in them; It’s just play for him!

KK- I love watching Rucy and Jack go at “arranging” their bedding. Jack pulls and Rucy uses her paws to smooth it all out. It’s the cutest thing ever!

My guys LOVE their rag rugs!  Leo especially enjoys unweaving the rags.  I figure he’s got his entertainment if/when he gets bored.  I’ve never caught them using it as spaghetti.

My cats have the purr pads and a cuddle cup.  When I got their new purr pads, have to get new ones every now and then, Jessica tried to confiscate them for herself.  The cats don’t tolerate this, since she used to pee on their bed all the time…..”No that stinky rabbit can’t go near my stuff!”  Kitties just don’t believe in that marking w/ poop and pee….atleast not where they sleep!

Would those fleece blankets be a problem for them?

Fleece is O.K. but the material is generally made from recycled plastic and if ingested could pose a problem of impaction. If you don’t have a chewer & eater, then you should be O.K.

Fleece is also good at wicking away moisture if they decide to ‘own’ the blanky by weeing on it

I purchsed the palace pet fleece after reading about it on rabbit.org  After some initial getting used to, Buns really likes it.  Best of all, it’s easy to clean & dry.

I’ll second the palace pet bed recommendation. They were a lifesaver when Spockie was incontinent. And they are VERY nice to do business with. Check for their sales. If you buy a big piece on sale, you can just cut it with a matte knife.
