        Hi,

So Thursday Charlie went to vet for sneezing. We decided to try benedryl and to call if we see thick discharge then we would start Baytril. Started benedryl and yesterday was good. This morning she is sneezing quite a bit, rough sneezing and even seemed to gag once. Otherwise she is playing, running around and being mischievous.

I called our vet to ask about starting the Baytril as I’m not happy with how she is sounding. She wipes her face so fast I can’t see the discharge. He wasn’t in, but his office called him. I am going to pick up Baytril this morning. We’ve been down this road before and she was on Baytril for 9-10 months long term before. We have been sneeze free close to a year.

I had a large bunch of flowers in the house, plus my husband was cutting pine wood outside this past week and know pine wood pellets irritated her for litter, so stopped using that long ago. My first thoughts were allergy.

Anyway, when vets office called back, they said doctor was confused because he had called and left me a lengthy message after our visit on Thursday. She said he wanted to start the Baytril then and that he has called  and talked to a specialist somewhere who said we may be dealing with syphilis. I am to pick up the Baytril today and call him Wednesday. If she’s not better in two weeks then switch medication and possibly treat for syphilis.

I was totally confused and so was the vet and his office. I never got the call and some of the notes didn’t match up. It said I called him with an update, but we were there on Thursday. Then she corrected herself and said yes you were here. Then she said the record said sneezed like three times and just some things that didn’t sound right.

They are going to have him call me  on day morning to clear things up. I think she needs the Baytril so that’s not s problem.

The whole conversation is totally confusing. Plus I thought syphilis presented lesions and sores which she’s never had. Just the sneezing. Is it possible she has syphilis without and lesions?

Her sneezing started when she was 10 weeks old. We treated almost 10 months, cleared up and have gone about a year sneeze feee until now.

Syphilis can cause sneezing. It is a secondary symptom that is associated with nasal lesions. Not all rabbits with nasal lesions will sneeze though. Sometimes the lesions are not open sores, they can be pimple-like or just a red swollen area. You said you haven’t seen anything though.

There’s no sign of swelling, pimples, lesions, sores.

Im at the vets picking up her baytril. The receptionist says those notes would not be in the report they sent me from her visit Thursday. These were additional notes vets made after the visit. He made some calls about her. He must have called the wrong phone number when he left me a message. Don’t know… will have to wait until Monday when he’s back and he will call me.

Poor little thing is just having a horrible sneezy day. The question of syphilis never came up over the course of the almost year we treated her URI before.

Have they done any x-rays or scans? Perhaps she just has a defect in her sinus cavity.

We haven’t had x-rays or scans done. I truly thought we were done with this after months of antibiotics and then about 10 months of no symptoms. Then wham! So fast it’s back.

I was so discouraged this morning as it seemed yesterday the benedryl was helping. Then all the confusion with the vet office. I’m glad he decided to call a specialist for another opinion after we saw him Thursday. He very good about that and conferred with one in the past about her.

The confusion all happened because he thought he left me a message to get started on the Baytril now, instead of waiting as we had discussed in his office. So the receptionist is telling me all this stuff from her charts that were notes added later after her vet called the specialist.
All info he thought he left me in a message,  he must haves dialed a wrong number and left it on someone else’s phone. Good thing I called this morning asking to go ahead and start the Baytril or I would have never had known he wanted to change the plan and start her on it two days ago.  I also wouldn’t have known anything about all the other things the receptionist was telling me about possible syphilis, etc.

My head was just spinning…syphilis?  He will call me Monday morning to explain things. From what the receptionist told me from what info she had is the plan is Baytril. I call them on Wednesday with an update. If no improvement in two weeks, change antibiotics and check into syphilis.

I really don’t think syphilis, but I guess it’s possible she may have internal lesions. Her first bought with this that lasted months and months started when she was 10-12 weeks old. She is 2 1/2 now.

I was thinking more like some kind of congenital defect. Perhaps there is a kink in the sinus that allows bacteria to accumulate. I’m just wondering because I dealt with chronic sinus issues before. His were caused by tooth roots. But the premise is the same, something is causing chronic irritation and allowing bacteria to pool. He sneezed and had a stuffy nose all the time, but it didn’t mean he had an active infection. Only when the bacteria reached a certain level did he have an infection and you could tell the difference. So he would be on and off antibiotics all the time.
