Aww he’s gorgeous. If he’s ten, I’d think that’s a bit old. You could consult with a rabbit savvy vet (and maybe even email Dr. Carolyn Harvey-anyone have her email?) and see what they think-if you were to neuter, then it would be wise to do a FULL blood panel first-if the kidneys aren’t functioning properly due to age then anestetic could be lethal.

IMHO if he were mine, I’d let him be-and I’m super pro-neuter

Mmm, at 10, if he was going to develop anything from being unfixed, I would think he would have done so by now. And since you are getting the others fixed, there’s not going to be the issue of accidental litters….If he were mine, I would leave him be also.

How lucky are you to have a 10yr old one! And a Dutch too!

I think it’s probably not entirely necessary at this point and at his age but if you do you will want to get a full work-up which includes bloodwork. I think too you should consult with your vet about this too. Personally though if it was my 10 year old rabbit, I would probably not do this – I’ve heard of people altering older rabbits though.

I’m glad you are getting your clan altered too.

Bunbun is so handsome – I just love the Dutch rabbits.

he’s very cute!!!!!!!!!!! i agree, i think it’s awesome you’re getting the rest of your (younger, i assume?) bunnies altered! i wonder if he could even impregnante anyone at this point (not that you should TRY… lol) i just wonder if after a certain age they are no longer fertile…? you could do the bloodwork anyways, that will give you a good idea as to his health and anything that might be looming… even if you decide not to neuter.

Hahah Beka! We wish!!!-unfortunately men’s (human anyways) potency and drive does not decrease noticably when they age, so I bet he’s still got ‘healthy little men’ (grosss….. )

ahh, i guess that makes sense. that’s why you have the stories about the older men (60s, 70s, 80s) getting their young lil GFs PG… lol! (ick.)

Hey now I am married to older man   I am in my 40s though not 20’s. .  Else I would have not married a man that much older than me.

Alright  no I think I would skip his neuter too..  Awe Bun Bun.  There is a bun looks something like him at pet store. OH boy you are going to have your hands full with all those spneutered buns.  Making sure they eat and are doing good.  We just worry so much about our bun children.

i guess i will just leave him be then  and build him his own little bunny castle seeing as how he doesnt really like other rabbits very much well thanx for the info. i know they live to be old but why is it unusual that he is a dutch that is almost 10 year old?

I don’t think it’s unusual for a Dutch rabbit to live to be that old – I’ve heard of a Dutch rabbit that lived to 13 years old. I’m not certain that there is a particular breed though that lives any longer than any other breed – I think it’s just a number of factors (including having diligent rabbit slaves and living indoors and probably just good bunny genes among other things). I have a friend who has a dwarf mix rabbit who is 10 years old and a friend who had a Jersey Woolie who lived for 9 years.

I would recommend talking to your vet- but I probably would not neuter either- UNLESS he was under for another anesthesia for another procedure like some dental work- then I might consider having it done.

Congrats on the wonderful care that you have provided to your bunny to get him to his senior years!  It says a lot about your commitment to your bunnies care.

Oh…in reference to my earlier comment: ” How lucky are you to have a 10yr old one! And a Dutch too!” I am meaning, it’s great that he’s 10, I’m fairly new to rabbits and first heard they live to 6 or 7years. So I’m always chuffed to see when people post about rabbits well past this age. Also, I was saying how lucky that you have a dutch – as I like the breed, no connection to age. :o)

Have you had Bun Bun the entire 10 years?

well i bought him from a petstore when he was very small so yea i guess i have had him all that time. he spent the first half of his life inside with me in a condo then we got a house and let him go outside in a cage and pen. but since i have had too many problems with them outside it was either bring them in or get rid of them. so we are bringing them inside (somehow).
