am i correct in assuming that my bun is probably too hot to play?

the weather has been very hot lately and she spends most of her time in her house (lying around) while we’re out at work. in the evenings when she’s free to play around the house, she just goes to her favourite spot next to the fireplace (cool tiles) and just lies there until its bedtime. or she will go to the study and lie around by my husbands feet.

she used to do her sprints around house and try to chew things and get to places, but now she hardly moves, just stretches out all the time.

i don’t mind as long as she is comfortable. but will she start gaining weight from lack of activity?

also, how do you know if a bun is getting chubby? she looks bigger but i’m not sure if its just part of her growing. she will be 1 year old in april.

I’m sure someone with more house-bun experience will chime in here, but it sounds like you’re right and your bun is just too warm.  I’d be concerned if it was just sitting doing the “tense bunny/meat loaf” thing, but stretching out sounds like it’s relaxed and not ill or stressed.  How warmish is it where you are?

            I agree.

What is your situation with fans and air-conditioning? You never want to blow directly onto a bunny, but circulating air in bunny’s room will help.

You can empty a small soda bottle and fill it with water. Put it in the freezer to make ice. Then set it in the cage for the day along one side. Your bun will snuggle against it to cool down, and lick the condensation off the outside for a cool drink as it warms up. Some feel it’s too cold to be touched directly, so you can slip it into a sock first to make it like an ice pack. She won’t go near it if too cold, but it’s very soothing if she’s too hot.

Also, you can cool down your bunny with a cool washcloth that’s been wrung out thoroughly after wetting. Wrap both ears like a turban. My bun would sit for quite a while in a meatloaf wearing the turban, just cooling off. You may find that if there’s a way to stay cool during the day when you’re working, it will be more tempting to exercise for a bit in the evening. You can always help your bunny cool down after a run as well.

thanks guys! it is very hot in my house. yesterday the temp was about 30 degrees (celcius) in her house. unfortunatley we have no ac, the fans don’t really make much of a difference but we do give her frozen bottles every day. might start wiping her with cool wascloth too. it;s too hot for the humans too!

Boy, the world’s climate is sooo out of control.  We’ve had major cold this winter.  Generally Philly stays pretty mild in winter.  Since I grew up in Chgo, I find Philly super mild.  But it’s been super cold out here.

Maybe give her a large cool tile for her house too. Try hanging a damp open weave cloth in front of the fan too, it cools the air as it passes thru it. My girl became less playful as she got older. She’s now 1yr old and tend to lay about more. Hershey sounds like she’s just comfortable. It’s tricky to come up with things to make them more active!

well i took her to stay at my mum’s house the last couple of days because it was REALLY hot (and mum has ac!), she even got to play on the grass for the first time, i think she enjoyed it. but i had to bring her home cos i missed her

thanks for the tips! i just don’t want her to be uncomfortable.

anyway i went to a wildlife park in the meantime and they had a number of buns lying around in the heat, with flies all around them. felt sorry for the poor lil buns.
