We tried a new toy for Spencer and set up a big basket filled with shredded brown shipping paper.  He loved it but it became a litter box.  Looked in it today and found tons of pee and poop.  Oh well … it was a good idea, but not for this bunny.  Any suggestions?  Should we try stuffing the basket with towels for him to play with?  He’ll probably always consider it a litter box though …

Maybe try just giving it to him without any stuffing. It’s good that he at least uses a litterbox and is trained well :~)

How about trying a paper bag filled with hay, and a couple treats hidden in it? I usually fill the paper bag up about halfway, and then just crumple up the top of it to keep it closed. If Spencer doesn’t seem interested, you can put a small hole in the side of it so he can smell the treats. It makes a bit of a mess when they are tearing it apart, but it works well for my digging bunnies.

Monkey loves her paper bag with shredded paper in it. Spends hours digging away at it and pushing the paper around. No poo or pee to be found in it as of yet

I make my diggy boxes in things that can double as litter boxes-easily the best is laundry baskets. I fill with shredded paper and if they pee or poo-easy clean up

Cardboard is fine too-even better you can throw it out when it’s used as a litter box

Can you try overturning the basket and cutting a hole in the side so it can be a hidey box? Some buns will potty anywhere where there is litter or paper, it can be frustrating when trying to make a diggy box, but the good news is: it’s better than them trying to pee and poo everywhere!

Here’s an example of what Beka described. Sammy just wasn’t interested in a diggy box, but she’s been under her basket for hours since I tried that. She also remodeled it to have a window on the side. (chomp, chomp.) You might want to put the cardboard down at first to make sure she still doesn’t pee on the floor while under there. Here’s the laundry basket from Joann Fabric. I cut the handle hole bigger on this side for her door. (Miley is on top.)

Here is the inside. It sits on top of a phone book that is open so she shreds and digs on that. Next to her left ear is the window she ate. This is probably made of peeled willow or wicker, and it’s very good for her to chew on. She watches the sunrise and sunset every day through her window.

That was precisely what I was thinking of when I posted that… Princess Samantha scooting around under her basket…

Great ideas everyone! Thanks! I turned the basket on its side and draped cloth over the top and side and put his fleecy blanket and some other fabric inside. He loves going in and out under the draped cloth. He does have another toy, it’s a cat hideway toy, that’s filled with the paper from shoe boxes. He loves that and rearranges the paper constantly.

How do I post pictures here? I’d love to show you what I did.

My play basket just came from BinkyBunny today! I’m excited to get home and have Bunners try it out. lol.. I have a feeling it will be a little small, but we’ll try it.

He needs a chewing hidey spot.

Oh, boy, are you gonna be sorry you asked.

I just wrote an explanation the other day, and despite Beka’s editorial opinion, it may be helpful to you:
