Toffee’s terrible teeth

Well, my vet is concerned about Toffee’s teeth.  She said they were in terrible shape today – pretty much she’s lopsided and her teeth we think are causing her eyes to tear because the molars are shifting around.  This has been an issue for her for the past 6 months and we feel it’s definitely age related.  She’s concerned this is going to become a quality of life issue for her.  It’s funny she said when she was doing her dental procedure today she kept calling her Pepe…it doesn’t surprise me as Pepe had terrible teeth and he was also an agouti.  Obviously we don’t want to have to do Toffee’s teeth every 2 weeks like we ended up doing Pepe’s and will it was just not a good ending for Pepe either.  I guess that’s what happens when you get old

 Also she said she doesn’t know how Bobby is chewing since he lost all his lower teeth on his left lower side – she said he had one the last time he came in and none this time…poor little dude, I feel bad for him.  But overall his mouth was in better shape than Toffee’s – I guess because he’s quite a bit younger than her.  She said he had lost a tiny bit of weight – funny, though Toffee has lost no weight despite having terrible teeth.

I’m sorry, tooth issues are really challenging! Poor Toffee. How old is she now? Did she have spurs and did have issues with her incisors too?

Rucy was missing quite a bit of molars one side of her mouth but she did just fine as she learned to chew with her right side. I always saw the hay and greens go into that side when she was chewing on a long piece. It didn’t seem to to affect her much at all.

So now with Toffee’s teeth going down hill, how often in the last six months has she had to go in so far. Ironically, though Rucy always had tooth issues, once she really was into her senior years, I had to get her teeth trimmed less. I can’t remember who told me this, but someone mentioned that since rabbits teeth grow slower as they age, that that may have something to do with the less frequent tooth trims.

I know the future of Toffee’s quality of life is concerning now. I am so sorry for that. : (

I’m sorry to hear Toffee is having more teeth troubles. And Bobby, too, for that matter.

It may have been me, BB, since my vet told me when Spockie was 8 and starting to have tooth trouble that it resolved itself because his teeth stopped growing altogether due to his age.

I’m sorry to hear this Sarita. I have no words of wisdom on this, but I hope you can figure out a path where she’s comfortable and able to eat.

What happened to Bobbys teeth (I guess I missed that). Did they just fall out.

BB – Toffee is approximately 10 years old. This time she had both spurs and had to have her incisors “leveled” out – it gotten progressively worse for her in the past 6 months. I think maybe her teeth are shifting due to her age. Her last dental trim was 2 months ago – the vet said she was afraid it would get to the bi-weekly that we did for Pepe and we don’t want to do that.

LPT – Bobby came to be with dental problems and half his teeth gone – he had been dumped at the guinea pig rescue due to this – the vet cleared up a dental abscess and he had some of the teeth pulled then and then some after that because they were loose. So he gets a dental check up now every 3 to 5 months. BB, I’m glad to hear that they can adjust and it doesn’t affect the quality of life. He’s probably about 3 or 4 years old at this point.
