I bought this real big bag of hay 92 oz or some such.   I get 1/4 down and it all tiny pieces and powder. I find that with any hay I get. I spoke with my friend about it too. She said the same thing.  I end up throwing it out when it gets down to the powder.

I get so tired of finding all that powder. I dont’ want it getting in the buns eyes or them sneezing from it.

So I have decided to order all my hay from BB.  I don’t see  many problems at the bottom of their bags of hay.

Has anyone else found this to be the case?

Also I hope my post is in the proper section.

I buy 50 or 25 pound boxes at a time and it’s always like that down at the bottom – very frustrating. Luckily it’s just a small amount at the bottom but it still makes me leary.

BB has good hay. i’ve experienced that too. i wonder if there’s any way to make treats out of the bits at the bottom like you can with the pellet dust. i think it’s just going to happen b/c it all settles at the bottom.

I too hate that!  However, I have not had that problem w/ the Binky hay.  I recommend Binky Hay to everyone, b/c it’s sooooo good.

Beka:  How do you make things out of the pellet powder?  I’m wondering if both dusts can be used to make treats.  Thoughts/ suggestions?

I don’t think I would make anything out of the hay dusts.

Some of my bags of hay are like that too and I have to chuck it.

I just think it’s the nature of the beast because I always find this at the bottom.  Some are way worse than others.

I make my own bunny cookies (when not too busy)..I put papaya and carrots and banana in a blender, and mix until well blended. Then in a bowl I fold in whole oats until it has a consistency that I can work with.

You could easily add the hay/pellet dust into this recipe.

I then bake at 350 until hard (luckily bunnies don’t mind hard cookies LOL)

I would not do the hay dust in anything – it’s not the same as the pellet dust – it’s not edible.

Really? I had no idea about that (hay dust not being edible) what a waste then!!

Hay, pellets, bunny litter, potato chips…you can’t get away from THE DUST! >.<
With the exception of Binky hay, which I highly recommend. Fresher, cleaner and the buns love it!

i think dust is the nature of the beast when it comes to timothy hays.  not sure about the other hays / grasses.  i have a farm bale of timothy hay and i fill up an old timothy store-bought bag to keep in the rabbit room since i don’t have room for the whole bale there.  i grab handfuls of hay from the bale & stuff it in the bale.  by the time i get to the bottom of this bag there is always powder.  there are little leafy bits that are dried & crumble really easily like the bit in my hand.  i sprinkle the dust parts in the litter before i dump it in the composter.

my guess is that when it’s baled up those bits aren’t dried out & stay intact & end up in the packages you buy in the store like they are in my bale.  then as the packages get transported & jiggled around those bits all crumble.  maybe the better quality hays are handled more before they’re packaged?

check out how much hay i have left from that bale.  i still can’t fit the lid on & i bought it more than a month ago now!

How big is a bale exactly?  That container in the picture – how much of a bale can you fit in that?

that’s the whole bale in the container.  it fits but sticks out the top a bit so i haven’t been able to put the lid on yet.   i think it’s about 38″ – 40″ long.
