I’m pretty concerned about Bindi. His poops have been getting smaller the last few days and today he had a good amount but after I changed his box, he had an assortment of small, weird poops including some tiny pin drop size ones and some cecotrope looking ones. He’s not shedding very bad and gets brushed every night so I can’t imagine it’s a hairball. He also seems a bit less active during out time and has lost a few ounces in the last few weeks. I’m upset he lost weight because he was just getting back up to his pre-ear antibiotic weight. What should I do or what precautions should I take?

It’s so hard sometimes. It feels like I’m constantly worrying about my rabbits’ health. A few weeks ago, Bindi had a statis episode, then another ear infection we just cleared up last week. I just don’t know why I’m having such bad luck with my buns. It’s really hard being stressed all the time. I tend to worry so much because I lost 2 buns very suddenly about a year apart a few years back and I’m so scared it happens again.

Have you ever watch the dog whisperer? I think, for your stress, you need to do like Ceaser says dogs do “live in the moment” doesn’t matter what happened in the past. For not being a hypochondriac-worrying won’t change anything. Keep an eye and do what you do, but don’t stress. Just enjoy your beautiful bunnies *Hugs*

Try giving a tummy rub for the small poopies. Give it some time and watch. You’ll know if you should take him to the vet.

For weight, I’d recommend doubling the carrots he normally gets. This makes bunnies fat, so it should help. Too, add some alfalfa, and alfalfa pellets. He should be chunky in no time I know you know, to build up slowly

A tummy rub and some gas pill  simethicone.  May help.  If continues well another vet trip.

Sorry if these questions are something you have answered before…but…

How old is he? Does he eat enough fiber/hay? Is he eating the same, but just losing weight? Smaller poops is something to watch and so you are right to do that, but of course, try to keep yourself calm. I know that is hard as we know they are fragile.

Does he eat any greens that he may be sensitive too. Some bunnies get gas with certain ones.

Sometimes my bunnies also have a set of smaller sized poops – I’m not sure what brings it on but here in TX we are having CRAZY weather and its thrown my bunnies off a bit as well.

To help yourself stay calm, remember that you are an incredibly vigilant bunny owner that does much more than the average owner would do. You go very far above and beyond the basic care that many rabbits get, and you are really doing the very best that you can, and that is all that anyone can do. Your bunnies are very lucky to have you and every day that they get to spend with you is a happy day for them, so try not to stress yourself out too much for the future. I’m sure that your bunnies want to bring joy into your life, and not stress, so let them make you happy by enjoying all the time that you spend with them.

I think you are extremely vigilant. Some rabbits just seem to be more prone to stasis and other medical in my experience…alot like people I guess – some are just stronger than others.

I really have to wonder if it might be prudent to take Bindi off pellets all together. I have the majority of my rabbits off pellets and they do just fine. My rabbit Mango was extremely prone to stasis and it was usually gas and he would go weeks without eating – I decided to just take the plunge and take out the pellets and he’s doing fine on hay and veggies only – no sweets at all though other than the papaya tablets which I give him for a treat. He has other issues unfortunately like continuous poopy butt – but I think it is due to being arthritic and having a problem cleaning himself. But no more stasis issues.

Thanks for all the replies. Bindi’s poops are pretty much back to normal now. I usually don’t worry about strange size poops when it’s Stormy because it’s quite common for Stormy and doesn’t usually lead to anything but Bindi has never done this before so I was a bit nervous about it. My bf is always like “they are fine, stop worrying” but I always get concerned when an animal changes it’s normal routine or habits.

LPT – I am so glad, things are back to normal. I am definitely like you when it comes to my bunnies. I tend to worry and just loop in my head about the minor changes and worry more than I probably need to. It’s especially difficult when you have lost bunnies suddenly because it can make you feel like you must have missed something, but many times bunnies can hide illness even from the most vigilent and/or even with all of the care that has been given, it just is their time.

So I too can use the “stay calm” advice that I myself give to others.

Your rabbits are lucky to have you.

MooBunnay – I wonder if the weather has anything to do with it. Though rabbits typically eat more during cooler times, I wonder if they eat less hay?… hmmmmmmm…..

You and I must be cut from the same cloth, Puffy. Tell you what…I’ll worry about Bindi for a while and you can worry about Mimzy and we’ll both get a break that way, hm? ^_^ (big hugs for Puffy)

I wonder too if it just isn’t par for the course for a person who is mom to a lop bunny to have more troubles than the uppy eared ones? You know, most of the recurrent, worrisome and nagging issues that buns can have I see here have to do with lops in general (or I could just be imagining it) but it seems a lot of the straight ear buns seem to skate by without many problems. Do you all suppose it’s just the breed? (I know they are more prone to certain issues due to their unique body structure, etc….)

I’ve had one or two minor problems with Fiver and Pip, but for the most part they are incredibly healthy little buggers. It’s always Mimzy I’m running off to the vet with.

Well I think I’ve spent the most money on Bindi than any other bunny. Stormy’s had a few vet trips for statis (including his last $300 emergency bill) but with Bindi the cost really ads up with all the re-checks for his ears.

The only other person I know with a lop lost hers to headtilt which resulted from a severe eye infection. I guess I can’t just go by 2 bunnies but my 2 rabbits who died suddenly in the past, mysteriously, were a mini-lop and a holland lop. Probably just coincidence though.
