So I’ve always bought my bunny timothy hay.  However, it seems like the older she gets the pickier she gets!  She still eats the hay but ends up dumping a lot of it on the cage floor because she only likes certain parts .  She likes the “fuzzy tips” and the “leafier grass-like” pieces but leaves all the crunchier harder stem like pieces.  Are there any brands of timothy hay that may have more of these desirable parts?  Or is there something else I could mix in with the hay to replace the timothy hay she won’t eat?

Hi Miyuki – How’s Inkblot doing health wise??? You could try Orchard Grass – my bunnies love it when I mix some in with their Timothy!! Oxbow carries it ans several other types of hay you could consider! Because of her health problems you may even consider offering her a little Alfalfa – I know that it’s not the best option for adult bunnies, but her circumstances are a bit different!!! Check with you vet!

I was thinking alfalfa too… as a supplment to timothy or orchard, it wouldn’t hurt to offer some if she likes it. She has limited time left, so I think you could bend the “rules” a bit in that regard. You wouldn’t want to do that with an adult bun who was not sick… but that’s my thought. I wonder what others think about giving terminally ill buns alfalfa?

I would give my terminally ill rabbit alfalfa and extra carrots and extra treats (within reason of course). At this point you are just trying to comfort them and maintain their weight. I say go for it.

I am new to bunny slave-dom – but when I’ve had terminally ill dogs I’ve spoiled them to pieces!

Hello everyone! She is fine right now flippersmom! She has been picky for a while just that recently she seems to be eating less of the hay. It could just be this bag she hates. It happens sometimes. Since she’s an only bunny she has to eat the whole bag herself . For a while she was eating the orchard grass from this “bunny pinata” I bought. So maybe I’ll try pick up some orchard grass and a different bag of timothy hay and mix them up. I don’t think she knows what alfalfa is. I haven’t ever gotten it but I could try some out too.

I tried to get her to eat more hay by buying this Sunseed Vegetable Garden Salad (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ…atid=19382) but she seems to eat all the dried veggies and leave most of the hay behind.

I have increased the amount of fresh romaine significantly recently though. I wonder if that is part of it. She doesn’t like to take her medicines so I kind of wrap it up in the leafy part of the romaine and she consumes the whole thing.

Don’t worry she is spoiled. She’s getting extra little treats recently because she gets them after her eye cleaning/ointment (twice a day) and each time she’s out she gets another small treat for going back in the cage. If you shake a treat bag she comes running and jumps back into the cage. She also was getting a little more apple because it would hide the smell of her fruit flavored antibiotic. She didn’t seem to mind the taste but hated the way it smelled! One whiff and she was out of there!

Oh and this is going to sound weird but she doesn’t really like fresh carrot. I try to give it to her now and then and she looks at me like “I don’t want that”. Sometimes if I leave it around in her food dish she might nibble it or eventually eat it but usually she just leaves it after the few nibbles.

The romaine could be it or maybe even the medication.
