I have three male guinea pigs who live in a cubes and coroplast cage. It’s two grids high so the rabbits(in theory) cannot get in it. Both my dogs and cat have no prey drive with my guinea pigs so I have no lid on it. The cage is divided as one of the pigs, Cal Lick, is aggressive with the others. So, I often put Cal Lick in the floor and let him run around while I clean the cage out. Thumper really likes him and will sit by him or stay close alot of times.

I was in the kitchen two mornings ago and got out the craisins bag and shook it. Here comes Gabby running for some but Thumper didn’t He is usually right at the fridge door when he hears the bag rustling. I peek in the living room and out of the corner of my eye I see Thumper hopping over the cage divider and was in the corner of the guinea pig cage looking at me. He let me pick him right up as I think he realized he couldn’t get back out.

I thought he learned his lesson and that night while watching tv with my hubby I look over and again Thumper is in the guinea pig cage and is on Cal Lick’s side of it eating hay side by side with him. He had even pooped in there as well.  I learned my lesson and pulled the guinea pig cage away from the wall and the hay box he was using as a launching pad to get into their cage.

          LOL
He could get out the same way he got in, he just knew you would see him. Actually, once a bunny learns a new behavior they often like to repeat it. They tend to like projects. So I think, since he is a jumper, if you really don’t want him in the piggie’s cage you need to add a top to it.

BTW, if you use cedar chips (that is common for guinea pigs) it is very UN safe for bunnies. So there is some risk. But if you use UNtreated pine shavings or Aspen shavings for both bunny and pigs, that is not harmful.

I used to use pine shavings but now use fleece bedding with towels underneath for the pigs. Much cheaper since their cage is large. Thank you for worrying about the guinea pig litter and Thumper being safe.

I’ll keep an eye out and if he continues to get in there I have some closet shelving from Lowe’s I used to have as a lid and I can put it back on there. I’ve pulled the cage out from the hay box so I’m hoping he can’t get in there for now.

I used fleece for my piggies……my mom was so fed up with me washing them in the washing machine at home she started buying me bags of aspen instead. I guess it is a bit gross washing pee fleece but the largest problem was I couldn’t control the hay well, and I would make a huge mess in the driveway brushing off the fleece…I dunno I was doing something wrong…I don’t think the wick was working right on them.

That is so cute he was hanging out with your pigger Would love to see some pix!

I go out on my porch and shake the fleece behind my front shrubs and bushes. One summer the little tomatoes started growing from where I would shake it and sometimes there would be some uneaten veggies. The fleece works the best when you wash and dry it three cycles before using it. Don’t use laundry softner or dryer sheets as they prevent them from wicking.
