› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Thoughts on new Oxbow Papaya Tablets
Overall, my rabbits mostly DON’T like these…only Emmy seems to like them. The rest either ignore them or just eat them maybe – no voracious I love these treats like the old tablets.
The new tablets are a larger white tablet than the old tablet which were orange. I think the orange ones may have been more fragrant too. I have not tasted the new tablets myself (nor did I taste the old ones since the rabbits liked them) so I cannot compare the flavors – I figure these must be okay to try (no, I would not try a rabbit pellet though
).
Anyone else tried these for their rabbits yet? What do they think.
I think too for the price I pay for these I will continue to find some palatable ones at the health food store.
Is the packaging different? I saw papaya tablets at my local store, but they were 13 dollars for 200 and I passed on them. The packaging was the same as the old jar, so I was not sure if they were the new or old ones. I’ve not tried the new ones, no. That’s interesting to hear they are not going nuts for them… I wonder if Oxbow does “animal testing”… or rather… TASTING to see how buns respond to their products?
No, it’s new packaging as well. If it was 200 it was the old ones and you should snatch those up! The new ones only come in a bottle of 90 right now for $7.86 so the old ones were also a better value.
I’d be interested to know as well if they are taste tested…according to my rabbits, they were not.
Oh wow! That is a big jump in price… geez louise. And the way WE go thru them…
I might have to go back there then and buy some of the old ones.
Can you write Oxbow and express your concerns? Might not accomplish anything, but who knows? If enough people contact them…?
Oh, good idea – I think I will do that. I would like to hear other’s thoughts on this as well if they’ve tried them. I cannot imagine it’s just my rabbits – of all my 9 rabbits with only 1 liking them I would say that says it pretty well, but then I always wonder if it’s just me.
Yes, run to the store and get what you can of the old kind!
Maybe we could post a poll here and send the results to the company? Strength in bunny numbers.
I ordered some but they haven’t come in yet. I’ll let you know when they do. I hope my bunnies still like them! The price is definitely a little ridiculous. But Winston bonded with me so well over the old version that I thought it would be worth it. Lets hope my bunnies like them better than yours!
Ok, I was scared when they pulled them, then excited when they were improving them. Now I’m scared again
What kind of papaya tablets from the health store can you give them? Does it have to be a particular brand-any ingredients I should look for/watch out for?
I emailed one of my friends who is on another list and she said the people on that list said the same thing – that their rabbits disapprove.
I bought some from American Health (Super Papaya Enzymes Plus) that also makes the Acidopholous tablets – but I’ve also bought a store brand for Whole Foods as well. Those they seem to like okay but I’m still looking to see what else is out there.
OH nooo thats not good. I ordered 2 of the 90 bottles. They haven’t arrived yet. Ohh Cotton is going to be so lost without them. I have about a weeks worth left of the original kind.
Dang why did they remake them for bunnies to dislike them so.
Yes definitely I will email them and respond to a poll here too. Good idea the poll then to pass it on to oxbow.
I am going to try some from somewhere else if I can find any. Dang that puts a damper on this whole situation. out of 9 bunnies only 1 likes them that says a lot.
Well, this is good to know since i haven’t bought any new ones for the store. Bummer! I think it would be a good idea to take the poll, and then I’ll email the contact I have at that company and direct them to the poll. Better for them to know!
I have had a few people from another rabbit list I’m on also say their rabbits give these tablets a thumbs down…I tried one last night and compared it to another brand that I have (not the old one) and they are odd because they are kind of chewy/chalky which I did not like. The other tablets while they did not taste good either did not have that chewy texture to them. As for taste, they don’t have much taste either. I would love to hear from others once they get them and introduce them to their rabbits to see how their rabbits like them. I think at this point maybe not enough people have yet tried them to do a poll.
ours arrived today. I tried 1 out on both my babies. They ate them. I hope to better tell tonite if they are a hit or not. They weren’t too enthuised about them it seems.
Darn. Yes they are pricey too. I will let you know tonite around 7:30 what my buns really think of them. That is the time I give them out.
I am going to put them in the original container the 500 came in. I still have a few of those left. Maybe gettting the smell from the originals on the new ones might help. I will do this after I give the new ones tonite though. Not b4. So I can tell for sure if they really like them or just so so like them. For sure i definitely want the old ones back. Anyhoo
My shelter has been recommending Papaya from Vitamin Cottage. But I don’t remember if they liked the Country life or the American Life Brand better. Any way you can get 500 for about $10.
However, the buns don’t like them as much.
They just got in the New Oxbow ones this week – I will have to check and see how the shelter buns like them.
The only thing to look for would be added sugar to make them palatable to humans as chewable tablets that they are marketed as. I am assuming the the Oxbow kinds were not as sweet since the only sweetener appeared to be what appeared naturally in the fruit.
I was excited that they had “improved” them- but now am wondering how my buns will respond. I made sure to order a lg bottle when I found out they were being discontinued- so I am no where needing more yet.
I give Mr. Bunny the Chewable Papaya Enzyme from American Health…I think they have sugar added, they taste good to humans too (I actually just ate one)…
Yes, most of the ones for human consumption have fructose or sucrose but the I’ve looked at the sugars at it’s less than 1 gram per serving.
WEll not a big hit. Cotton ate one wouldn’t accept the 2nd. Ruby ate hers. I put the 2nd one in cottons food bowl. This morning when I fed them their food I forgot to to remember whether or not he had eaten the 2nd one.
This forgetting business is getting on my nerves.![]()
O.K., I’ll pass on the new ones then. I ran out and have been giving my two dried papaya instead and they love it more than the papaya tablets.
uh-oh….Frank grabbed her first papaya treat and ate it, so I was feeling great. I tried to give her another one, and she turned up her nose. She coughed about three times in a minute. I haven’t ever heard her cough before. Of course, I was immediately concerned but I think it was the chalky consistency of the new tablets she didn’t like. She refused a second one. Winston hasn’t touched his yet.
bummer. I ordered 2 bottles. I never thought to question Oxbow’s products. I guess I learned a valuable lesson! I’m still going to offer them as supplements in their pellets during heavy shedding periods.
Yeah, mine don’t love them, Daisy will eat hers but it will sit in Ruff’s cage for a while before he eats his.
Unrelated, but Sage Cat, I miss Vitamin Cottage. When I lived in Boulder, I shopped there all the time. I’m so bummed there isn’t one here. I Love love love Vitamin Cottage! waaaaa!
I did find the Vitamin Cottage ones and bought a bottle. They seem to like those okay.
Mine like theirs. The 2nd day Cotton decided they are good and looks forward to them. Ruby no problem.
last summer I had picked up BOGO bottles of papaya enzyme tablets from GNC (natural brand). Shadow gets one everyother day or 2-3 times a week. She LOVES them. we shake the bottle and she runs over to us or stands up in her cage. so I recommend them.
I had found a bottle of the old ones and got it, but it did have an expiration date on it. You can check your old bottles for that. This was almost a year past the date, so when Sammy didn’t eat one, I figured it was just too old and threw them all out. ($ down the drain, but I don’t like expired anything.)
I have been leery of trying the new ones since I don’t know if it was that bottle in particular or Papaya tablets in general that she didn’t like.
Are the ingredients listed on the bottles? YOu could read both and compare the differences. Breakdown of sugars, etc. that sort of thing.
It doesn’t have the nutritional breakdown in it – I checked. It does have ingredients.
I just noticed today that Archie had some hair in his poo so I was going to buy those but if no one else’s bun likes the Oxbow, then I didn’t want to waste my money. We have a Vitiamin World and a GMC around here.
I found this one: http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.asp?xs=2E5D68589E4D4C1D83B1324982C9F551&PID=758&CID=&CPID=468&rlid=
and this one: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133211
I was leaning towards vitiamin world, are those ok to give them?
I have been giving shadow the GNC brand for abut year. I don’t see any problem with them. they look like they are smaller than the oxbow, which I think is good, less sugar.
D: Oh no! This is discouraging. Papaya tablets are Little-Bit’s only treats! I’ve had my new bottle for about a week now but haven’t tried it out yet.
If they’re less potent, I guess this backs up my theory about buns ‘tasting’ more with their sense of smell than their sense of taste.
Ruffles, I love Vitamin Cottage and you can order from them online too, since you live out-of-state.
