I thought i’d be dreaming of rabbits last night after sighting 4 yesterday. I was driving home from my sister’s place – she lives in same neighbourhood – when a little rabbit appeared from under a car. On stopping I discovered 3 very young ones under there! The were either 12 weeks old or a small breed. All grey and brownish in colour. Agouti I suppose. I tried to get them out to capture and find where they came from. I even recruited my sister and her 3 kids to help but no luck. They popped out to munch on grass but soon went back under car.
A gentleman a few doors down told me they’re always about and many have tried to catch them. Also that one has been hit by car there before. They has to be many more taken this way though.
He indicated which house thay came from and that the owners let them breed…you can see where this is leading. Then I saw an adult rabbit running down a driveway across the road and the owner just arriving home. I went to ask her about the rabbits and she said they were from house at back of her place and there were zillions! She said they were ‘wild’ rabbits and were all over the neighbourhood. In my 15 years living here, I’ve never sighted them.
So I had to be settled with the fact that they would make their own way to safety and that the situation was out of control. Still, it was hard not to keep thinking of these little guys. Now I grew up in the country and have seen my fair share of wild rabbits but these looked like pets. I rang animal welfare to report it and was told they get these calls all the time and basically nothing they could do unless people bring in any they’ve captured. The woman said the local council should really step in so today i’ll try that tack and see how I go.
This is the downside of being a bunny slave – you want to oversee welfare of all you come across. I’m very frustrated!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t dream of rabbits but of bicycles of all things – go figure!???
