        hiiii

I’m getting ready for a new baby and wanted to make sure I have all the supplies I need. I’m debating about what kind of litter box I should purchase. many people use large cat litter boxes but I’m worried about the litter or hay being flicked out and making a big mess. I saw that many people have used a large corner litter box with a grate on topped they said it works well with their dwarf breeds. I’m getting a holland lop mix so it should be fairly small when full grown.

I will be using equine pellets from Tractor supply as litter. just wanted to see if its just better to get a large cat litter box or would this corner box be ok.

        thank you!!

If the holland lop you’re getting is a mix, it depends on what it’s mixed with. If mixed with a larger breed, you could be having a larger bun. There are also “false dwarf” holland lops that are bigger than the true dwarves. It’s part of their genetics

I have a Netherland Dwarf (got him at 7 months so he was fully grown by then) and I use the litter box with a grate instead of a cat box because I know Kurotta will definitely fit. But if you’re getting a baby and it’s a mixed breed, I think going for a cat litter box would be safer for the long term. There are ways to work around the mess by putting the hay in a rack etc

his mom is a doubled maned lion head and dad is a holland lop and I read that lion heads are pretty close in size with holland lops? but either way I guess it would be safer to go with a cat litter box. thanks!!

p.s kurotta is such a cute bun!!

If the bunny isn’t pure bred it’s pretty hard to determine what size it will eventually grow into as we won’t know their history of genetics

Heh thanks! Hope to see pictures of your new baby too soon!

Id just go with the litter box since rabbits like to eat while doing their business and the cat litter box you can also put some hay in for the rabbit to eat. I have 2 ranbits and they each have their own box since they tend to go by svent to tell what is theirs.

I’m a firm believer that there is no such thing as a too big litter box, only too small! Buns eat where they poop (or poop where they eat, not too sure about that one haha), so usually you want to put hay in the litter box. Big litterboxes are nice to chill and eat in and it ensures that no pee or poop will fall or spill out and it ensures the bunny has to be inside the box to eat the hay, instead of nibbling the hay when his bum is outside the box. It also prevents mess if the bun likes digging in it, a larger litter box (with high edges) is harder to spill the contents out of than a tiny one. Especially if you ever plan on getting a second bun a big box is a must so that they can eat hay and poop together.

Bigger the better, Olly is a big rabbit he has a big tray, he had small ones but I didn’t like seeing him trying to get settled all hunched up in a small tray.
