› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Third bunny – TODAY!
Hello everyone,
I have not been on for ages … and now… I’m logging in… to tell you all that we are getting a third bunny! TODAY!
I got an email from our House Rabbit Society that one of the sanctuary homes had to shut down due to illness and that very sadly, four bunnies had to be rehomed. As you all know, we are not all that rabbit-experienced but we have been owned by rats for the last 7.5 years. Well, one of the bunnies, Timothy, is nearing the end of his life, he is not very mobile anymore (hindleg degeneration), he is grumpy and needs butt wipes. Oh, don’t we all need butt wipes when we get up there in age? Anyway, of course I had to check out their pictures and Timothy got me. I just … I had to tell my husband and I asked him whether he agreed that our home would be the perfect one for Timothy. He is emotionally exhausted (a lot of our elderly rats have been passing away in the last few weeks) but I told him to focus on the good. We are used to letting go (as unemotional and harsh as this may sound). We already have a nursing home here with all our old rats. We use laundry on all our rats, which means we are used to doing rat laundry… what’s one more, right? Timothy is kept on fleece because of his immobility. I don’t like fleece because it’s not a natural material and it doesn’t absorb pee well at all. We have thick 100% cotton curtains and linens that we will be using.
I will pick him up today around 2pm. Timothy!

How kind of you to provide a loving home for an elderly bunny that deserves some TLC before passing on to the Rainbow Bridge. Especially cases like this make me sad to think that most likely humans let this poor guy down ALL of his life until he ended up in rescue.
You are such an angel to take an emotional risk on an elderly needy bunny!!!
Awww, thank you KatnipCrzy!
I don’t know much about Timothy but I do know that the HRS here in San Diego is AWESOME. The volunteers truly care a lot for all the rabbits and members, they do so much for the rabbits! We look out for the rabbits at the shelters, too.
It is sad that Timothy is losing his sanctuary home but I know he will be happy here, too. Who knows, maybe he will even get along with Velvet and Dancer! That would be ideal because the two of them are 24/7 free-range rabbits. They can go wherever they want to go and Dancer loves to groom all his stuffed toys once Velvet is done with her full body massage. Velvet is a mooch, she rarely ever grooms him but he licks her everywhere all the time (and she flops over). It would be so nice if Timothy could enjoy being groomed by one of his kind!
As far as I know though, Timothy is grumpy around other rabbits. We will see… 5 more hours!!!
Wow I think Timothy is gorgeous, good for you giving him a loving home for the rest of his days. He is lucky to have your kindness.
Lx
How sweet of you to rescue him! I bet you’ll be an angel in his eyes for giving him a loving, caring home.
I’m finding the words hard so BIG HUGS to you & hubby!
Yay!! That is so kind of you!! I’m so happy for Timothy that he has found someone kind to take care of him.
I love him! How could you resist that sweet bunny. You are great for doing this for him.
That’s great that you’re giving Timothy a good life for what he has left of it!
I must also chime in and say I also love the San Diego HRS! ![]()
Thank you all! Well, he is in worse condition than I thought. He is completely immobile. He loves to be held and he licks me when I pet him. He is the first bunny to lick me. He lays on one side only but fortunately, this morning when I got up, he had moved. What kind of existence is it for a bunny to just lay there? When I hold up his back part, he takes off and wants to explore. He peed on our carpet, my husband’s beloved holy carpet with the palm trees! His right leg is completely stiff but he has feeling in it. He wants to move his left leg but it’s hard because of the rest of his body. His left hand is crippled. He is really, really affectionate and sweet and a complete trooper! I do need more advice though. I will post more after I read more about elderly bunnies. He seems ok but from a bunny’s viewpoint… I have to keep his quality of life in mind. I’m thankful for this forum. I need all your help so I make sure to do the right thing. I took more pictures too… will upload them in a bit.

If his front area is able to move, you might want to try using a sling under his hind quarters. Get a long strip of soft fabric and gently lift up his backside with it. Then, just walk around with him while he explores. I would, of course, check with a vet first to see if this is doable without putting him in pain as his legs may have become too stiff and could hurt if he was slung like that.

Liza, hope you don’t mind, I’ve re submitted your pictures from the links you pasted.
He looks a lovely old boy! It’s good to hear he’s affectionate! To me that means he has quality of life and isn’t miserable.

Thank you so much for posting the pictures for me! I don’t know what I did wrong. I could see them this morning on here. THANK YOU!!!
Oh my, and THANK YOU ALL for the great information on disabled bunnies! THANK YOU!!! I have been reading a lot…
When I got home, the house stank incredibly. I knew it came from Timothy. I looked inside his pen – and he was covered in poop. I gave him a bath, which was so undignifying… I felt so bad for him. I was in the tub with him because our sink is too small to fit his bottom under the faucet.
Should I try the kitchen sink? We have very little pressure in the kitchen sink. So I was standing in the tub with him, just trying to get him all cleaned up, that poor boy. I then wrapped him in a nice comfy sheet and massaged his legs and he was licking my shoulder while I was holding him. He just made me melt. He licks me a lot!
See, Velvet and Dancer don’t show affection toward me like that. They have their own ways to show us their love but Timothy… he just licks us and licks us and licks us… he is just so sweet! And he eats his pellets – a lot of them! And hay. He likes his hay.
I just wish I could make him whole again.
I had him on a very soft sweater on the living room floor too so that he sees other things and there he was, just sitting there, eating hay, watching me clean his pen and enjoying something different.
Velvet and Dancer don’t care that he is here. They have free access, free-range at all times but they are not interested. They are the best bunnies in the world!
Again, thank you all for the great information!
He sounds beautiful! Must be so nice for him, being there with all the animals and humans around a lot more.
No prob with the pix. You go to mountain icon(Insert pic) on the editor to put picture code in. Enter url code in the box then remove the square brackets + contents from each end. i.e. . There may be an easier way, but that’s how I do it, or else put it on end of the post as an attachment.
Keep the picture coming!
This is a link to Palace Pet Beds. They have pieces you can buy that do go on sale and don’t take long to have shipped. Spockie was disabled just like your new little man for about 8 months, including being incontinent. Mostly it was that he couldn’t heft himself into his litter box anymore. These rugs are made for hospital use and senior animals or puppies. They have raw edges that can be cut with a matte knife or scissors, so if you can ask for a large piece on sale, get one. Then cut it down and place in spots in your home and in his cage. I used to swap out a clean one for a soiled one daily, then toss them into the washing machine. Don’t need to use the dryer within hours, but you can, too.
Eventually I carried Spockie around the apartment to look out the windows and have a change of scene. Laying on the floor kept him company when he was under the loveseat – his favorite spot. Here’s a pix. I had to bathe him in the bathroom sink several times a week by the end. He liked it and I got lots of kisses too. I supported his front end with one arm, set his backend in the sink in warm water and ran the faucet next to him. Then used a washcloth or my hand to just wash his back half. Maybe swipe his front feet a bit. Scooped him into a towel on my lap. He dozed off one day – I almost cried. It still makes me well up. But it’s a wonderful thing to make his last days or months a loving, gentle experience. He became seriously ill (GI tract) abruptly over a few days, so he went downhill fast. You’ll know when his quality of life changes that way. He clung to me. This was after a gorgeously healthy bunny for 7 years, so the last year was hardest but we were closer than ever. You’ll know when he’s ready.
Thank you for that link! Rabbitpam, the care you gave to your Spockie sounds exactly like what I’m doing over here. Spockie was very loved. Reading your posting made me feel like right there. He was very comforted by you and loved. I’m sure he is bragging about you at the Bridge and shares the love you have given to him with those less fortunate than he was.
The former sanctuary home had Timothy for four years. He came into the shelter all filthy and wet and underfed. He was already older when he came in. We don’t know how old he is. What I know is: he is wonderful.
I’m running around trying to find the best little beds for him; the most absorbing ones, the fluffiest ones, the softest ones… I really don’t like shopping, but for Timothy, I will.
Cats and Rabbits and More is a website that has both advice on living with disabled and senior rabbits, and a variety of products to sell.
I’d recommend letting your fingers do the walking on line and order just what you need from rabbit sites like Binky Bunny, The Busy Bunny, and the House Rabbit Society. Shipping may take as little as a few days, or faster if you request overnight or 2nd day, and the products are designed to be safe for rabbits. It can save a lot of time and hunting, and the shipping costs are not much more than your tank of gas by the time you’re done.
Our local HRS President recommended certain rugs to me, so I bought a lot of them today. I’ve been doing a wash every day because I’m so OCD (the second it’s wet and I notice, I have to change out the towels). These are fleece rugs (face sheep skin ones) that I got. It’s a certain kind and they are supposed to work really well.
Tonight, my husband held him up and I wiped him instead of giving him a bath. Then, I fluffed up his fur. My husband has to hold his hand in front of him so Timothy can lick him. He gets all into it, he grooms my husband because I am grooming his bottom. He loves it. It’s so nice to have an understanding and caring husband by my side… Ah! I’m a lucky person!
