Therapy bunny

Shamrock had her first visit to the nursing home. She sits in her basket and allows people to pet her, only a couple people because I don’t want her to get stressed. She seems to enjoy the attention though, the people aren’t allowed to hold her only pet her, she has to stay in the basket for her safety. One lady Peggy really enjoyed the rabbit, Peggy gets depressed in the afternoon, she had the basket on her lap and was petting shamrock and the nurse told her that the bunny had to go see another patient and peggy told the nurse that “she didn’t want to share”. It was so sweet to see the smile on the patients faces. 

 I took gizmo once but he didn’t like it so I thought I would try shamrock and she ws very clam, she even fell asleep at one point. When we came hoem Gizmo thought she needed a good cleaning and spent the next 1/2 hr grooming her and rubbing his sent on her I swear he was saying “eeww you smell like humans, I must clean you”.  I promised some of the patients that I would bring shamrock back in two weeks to visit again.  I figure that I’ll visit every 2 to 3 weeks as long as shamrock is still enjoying it.

That’s so cool. The reason we got our first bunny was my son wanted to do therapy with her, but she’s a bit, shall we say, feisty. (the lovely Pringles) but her mate Toby is very gentle and used to being handled because of his tooth problems.

Did you have to go through Angel Paws training? I would love to see photos of Samrock and his basket!

Thats a really good idea. I kno when im feeling down or something Fluff’s my theropy because he just snuggles.

That’s great what you are doing. One thing I’ve learned in my 27 years is that there is nothing that raises the spirit like animals. They are so therapeutic.

My mom does therapy with her doberman and was certified through delta society and I though it would be a good idea to take a rabbit since they are none threating.

Those pictures are adorable!! I started a pet therapy program with my work and one other continuing care facility…do you have any tips or ideas to share? We’re taking our shelter bunnies to visit once a month

I just love Shamrock helping out with the people at the nursing home!

A few of our local hospitals have Pet Therapy and they get to have their own badges w/ their photos on them-so cute. Mostly dogs and cats but when I worked there they always told me I could bring a bun if I wanted.

But with hospitals and the germs…I really wasnt comfortable bringing my own rabbits in there and them bring something home. With nursing homes that is their homes so typically they arent really “sick.”

That’s so good! Right bun for right situation. Having working in nursing homes, I can say therapy animals alway bring a heightened level of interest to the residents – and the staff too! I would end up following the dogs around – lol! Can’t imagine what would happen if I’d seen a therapy bunny!

You know – in the 2nd picture, if you squint, you can sort of see a Shamrock over Shamrock’s left eye – stem and all! A 3 leafer folks – not 4. Love the shamrock on the bears nose too!
