I’ve read so much about how great rabbit’s hearing is, but what about their vision?

Does anyone know anything about rabbit vision? I often wonder how good they can see when I shut off the lights.

I think I’ve read that they see better in the dark than we do, but their daytime vision is not fabulous, particularly at distance. If you make a sudden move 15 feet away, they might jump because they can’t be sure what it was that moved. Also, they don’t see well in extreme close-up, either, plus they have that center-vision blind spot at close range that all critters do who have eyes on the sides of their heads. That eye position means that they don’t have the depth perception that we take for granted, but they do have a wider angle of peripheral vision. Their sense of smell is great however, and makes up for a lot of the vision disadvantages.

What I can’t understand is why, with their limited clear-vision range and lack of depth perception, they don’t crash into, fall off, and trip over every solid object in the room. (Although that would explain how my girlbun kept winding up in the wastebasket!)

Tamera’s right on.  it makes the Bunny 500 sounds even more dangerous.  imagine a Nascar racer driving round the track with a post-it stuck right in between his eyes.  i think a lot of it has to do with placement too.  if you’re one of those people who rearranges furniture everyday, your bun has to relearn the landscape everytime.  if they know that items are always in the same spot, it probably makes them feel a little bit more secure.

this is great article from Dana Krempels that talks about what bunnies see and how they see it… http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/vision.html

I have read that they don’t see details very well.

For example – they see you as a big blob. But, they know the difference between your blob and you boyfriend or husbands blob.

However, if you walk in the room carrying a big box – your blob has changed enough that they may not recognize you right away – Therefore, it is a good idea to always say something as you walk into the room the bun is in – so they recognize you.

thats funny beka ahaha  hehe.  I think even regular drivers sometimes drive like they have post its stuck between their eyes.

I notice when I open the bedroom door Cotton panics and runs and stops by his cage. Must look funny to him a big gray door opening.  I wonder if the big gray door looks like the black hole to  him and when it moves he gets confused when the black hole brings us back into the living room.
