wednesday morning, we left chicago at 4:10 am… the buns were in a 2-story, 2×3 NIC grid cage in the back of my ford escape (rear seats down)
we had a motel reservation at motel 6 in Elk City, OK about 90 miles west of oklahoma city (about 890 miles from start),, we got there and checked in around 6pm.. the first thing we did was unload the cage to get them inside,, BUT their stupid door setup (with hydraulic shock) did not permit the door to open fully and we could not fit the cage into the room. we put them back in the car and canceled the reservation. We drove on westbound in Interstate 40 all the way to the New Mexico welcome center where we decided to just sleep in the car for 7 hours (or try to at least),, thus concluded 20 hours of driving on day 1.
day 2 we continued west on 40 to Holbrook, AZ where i canceled the 2nd nites hotel reservation, and we continued SW on AZ 260 thru payson and down to our new home in Mesa. We arrived around noon, 1740 miles. i think the buns had it easiest. they could sleep and eat whenever they wanted. we had a comforter thrown over the top and sides of the cage so as to not disorient them. me,, my butt was sore for the next 48 hours from driving for so long.
We’re supposed to have our first 110 degree days wed & thursday, but we have an awesome A/C system in this house and the buns love it. even 78-80 with the ceiling fans is amazingly comfy when theres almost no humidity.
