I’m in the process of buying a Netherland Dwarf bunny. And as im doing some reading about rabbits and dwarfs, the quality of a rabbit show up. i’m buying mine from a breeder, its fairly cheap i believe, $50. so im guessing is a pet quality. But im wondering how can someone tell whats the quality of someones rabbit (or ND for my matter). And Can the breeder tell the quality of the bunny as soonest its born? and how many qualities do rabbits and/or ND have?

I might be thinking of breeding my ND down the way

          Hello Kamina!

I would like to mention that on this website posting about intentional breeding is not allowed. We recommend that rabbits be housed indoors as members of the family and be spayed/neutered to prevent pregnancy and prolong the life of the bunny. For us all rabbits are “quality” because we consider them companion animals

Please check out our forum rules:

I do hope you reconsider breeding any rabbits you do end up getting as they are the 3rd most abandoned and euthanized animal in the US. Breeding can also be very expensive as any pregnancy could require costly vet treatment if complications were to arise.

            I agree with MD.

But to answer your question, “quality” simply means that the rabbit in question meets the breed standards that have been set.
Here is a website that talks about it: http://www.nendrc.com/netherland-dwarf-rabbit-standard.html

A pet quality Nethie would simply be a rabbit that does not meet those standards. They can still be purebred and whatnot. Since there are a lot of genetics involved, obviously not all offspring are going to be show quality.

Does that mean anything to us? Not really. Those bunnies are still wonderful and they make great pets. They deserve a home just as any other bunny would. =)

Edited to add: I just re-read my post. In no way am I condoning breeding. I was just trying to say that there is nothing “wrong” with pet quality bunnies. They make great pets. Show quality and pet quality are just not something most of us even consider since we are a house bunny forum. We just want bunnies that we can love and spoil.

              Do not breed, please.

Breeding isn’t something to decide on a whim and it is NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT something you do with pet-quality rabbits. There are swarms of pet-quality rabbits sitting in shelters and dying daily. If you’re going to add to this population “just because” I really think you should change your mind. Rabbit-breeding, REAL rabbit breeding is something for people who’ve thought it through. They face realities like euthanasia if their rabbits are born with serious problems. Think about that. What are you going to do with a rabbit if its little insides are born on the outside? Do you have the strength to put it down yourself? If you have a strong stomach, google the accepted humane ways to put down a baby kit. Otherwise, you’ll have to use a vet. do you have hundreds of dollars sitting around?

Do you know what a peanut is? When dealing with dwarf breeds, you are sure to run into them, and it can be really heart-breaking.

Did you know it’s not entirely uncommon to lose the mother in birth? What would you do?

If you are serious about breeding, you have a lot to learn (and you can’t learn it on this forum) but don’t buy a cheap, pet-quality rabbit and toss it together with another one just to make babies. Just don’t do it.

I was not aware of that im sorry. I do believe every rabbit should get a loving home and a quality of life. I was just wondering what breeders meant by pet quality, show etc

So mostly likely is because they are bigger or what not

                  Thank you for the information

Yeah i know what peanut is, while reading about ND i found about that. But i think a pet quality cant reproduce peanuts and is why most breeders get a false and true ND to breed, not 2 trues ND. But thank you for your concern. I’m wasnt planning on anything and i know is not something i should do out of impulsive,  i was just wondering.

If the breeder didn’t offer you papers, it’s probably not show quality. A lot of people call themselves breeders and give a bad name to those who do it right. I don’t condone breeding on a number of levels, but I have been in touch with a breeder of Giant Chinchillas in Arkansas who has helped me with questions on my G.C. (who’s underweight and would’ve been meat…ugh) She’s exceptional (and doesn’t eat the pet quality ones!)

Anyway, yes, please do reconsider breeding. There are so many rabbits out there. I bred chinchillas for awhile and always worried if they were going to a suitable home, much as I tried to screen buyers. You don’t want all the extras you can’t sell. And cute as rabbits are, really, there are a lot of people out there “breeding” dwarfs. And you’d be in for all those people calling you with every little problem. You sound new to rabbits and rabbits aren’t quite as easy to raise as the old stigma might imply. And noone should breed an animal because they want to profit from it. Doesn’t work out. Don’t know your motives, but we just cannot be much help on this forum since we only love them as family members.

Enjoy that baby. Oh-and you’ll enjoy it much more if it’s neutered. Bunnies are the best!

                        Hi, Kamina,
I’m just going to lock this thread so it doesn’t continue with discussions of breeding due to the rules as stated above.
Please feel free to post a fresh post to discuss your new bunny and we will be happy to help out with any questions you have. And post pix – we love meeting new four-footed members.
I also recommend reading the menu from the banner above of Bunny Info. (also from the Home Page) to learn all about info. for setting up your home for a new bunny and great info. on what to do and expect. It answers loads of questions even before they’re asked.
