As many of you know, I love promoting the covered litterbox. And since so many of you have asked questions resulting in this suggestion, I have started this thread for you. A covered litterbox can solve
-smell problems (All of the boxes below have venting for insertable filters)
-digging/ mess problems
-poop getting kicked out
-hay capacity issues: covered litterboxes hold more hay, allowing your rabbit to have more hay available at all times
Price range: Covered litterboxes are usually in the $15-30 range. As a general rule, Target and Walmart have the cheapest prices but you may go with a petstore for more specific types of boxes.
Here are pix of some of the boxes I’ve tried and what I thought:
1) VanNess XL covered cat litterbox (with door)
Grade: A+
Comments: Largest one I could fine, plus it has a doggy door. The box shape fits newspapers nicely. Only disadvantage was that I could only find really dark colors, so Medusa has to poop in the dark. She’s still able to see the hay alright because I see her picking at it. I found it at Target & Walmart. Sturdy latches grip the box portion for carrying.

2) Cats Rule Max box
Grade: B-
Comments: very cute, but to the top doesn’t snap onto the bottom so if your bunny is a poker/pusher, he could push off the top. Contoured edges makes newspaper fitting difficult. Also, a little crowded for 2 bunnies because it is a square shape, whereas other boxes have usually longer length than width.

3)Petmate deluxe hooded litterpans
Grade: A-
Comments: Light coloring allows for more visibility, size is ok for single rabbit, like the handle on top. After a while the area where the lid and box snapped together kinda got loose, so the bottom falls if I carry it now.

I have NOT tried these, but I could see these working for bunnies whose are crazy diggers that might dig stuff out of the openings even with doors. I’m sure you can teach your rabbit to jump into it, by placing the litterbox next to a higher object they can jump onto first and then jump down (ex: put it next to a chair, bunny learns to jump onto chair first, then down into litterbox):

OPTIONAL FILTERS
1) Cats Rule (my choice): These come in different scents. I’ve tried Unscented and Fig. Strangely enough, I found that the Unscented had a more pleasant smell and lasted ALOT LONGER than the fig. The unscented smells kind of like fresh laundry / laundry detergent (the nice type).

2) Charcoal air filters: these seem to work, and are probably better at filtering perse, but I love the Cats Rule scent.
3) Zeolite filters: These are supposed to absorb ammonia. Might be good for especially strong urine smells.
Please feel free to add pictures/reviews of your COVERED litterbox!
great info, it’s helpful to have all the pictures too!
since you’re our resident expert on covered litter boxes – is there a big price difference in the different kinds you tried?
They’re all between $15-30. The top loading one you could probably just make out of a huge storage bin & cut a whole out of the lid. I’m sure many buns would learn to use it no problem if you guide them into it a few times—I’m curious as to whether it would be a foolproof no-mess digging box! Someone should try it and report back to us! Fortunately Medusa is pretty neat so I won’t be trying it with her.
Moobunnay, please give us a report on your Booda Domes!
O yes, my prized booda dome
I use one that has a ramp – i can’t remember what store I bought it at but I know they also sell them online. My favorite is a booda dome with a ramp – especially useful because if you have a digger bunny its very hard for the bunny to dig the hay OUT of the box and ALL the way down the ramp – so any excess hay is usually left on the ramp if its not in the box (until, of course, your bunny gets extra smart and starts carrying pieces of hay down the ramp, and onto the floor JUST to annoy you as my BF’s bun Henri likes to do!)
[script removed]
The only downside to this box is some buns do not understand the ramp concept – all of mine got it down within the first day – Grace however (being blind) is quite wary of the ramp/tunnel area so I have to leave the lid off for the moment.
oops hmm picture did not attach – will attempt again a little later!
ooo the ramp one sounds exciting!
I couldn’t seem to figure out how to copy and paste the photo…but above is a link to the type of litterbox I have. I bought mine at a petstore, but the good thing about getting it online is there are a few different colors so you can pick one to go with your decor!
The Booda Dome

Thanks for posting the pic! I’m still getting used to having a mac and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to copy the pic, hahaha
booohooo all i see is a red dot in the pic 🙁
My bunnies won’t go into something that doesn’t have two exits. I guess they feel like they’re trapped.
Maybe the one that has more transparent sides would work. I wished they liked the covered boxes. I’ve tried the Boodadome and one that was similar to #1. They would go in, but as soon as they heard a noise they’d jump out, and finish their business outside.
Maybe since I have adopted bunnies that have had rough pasts, they are not relaxed enough for these kinds of boxes.
BB has lots of hay available everywhere though. If you only put the hay in one location (the box only), I think most buns should eventually learn to go where the food is.
Hey, now that’s an idea Poopy! And if that doesn’t work, I’ll add healthy treats they enjoy with the hay, like rosemary and mint and see if that’ll help. However, before I go out and buy another covered litterbox, I’ll make a cardboard one about the same size and see if they will warm up to that.
I REALLY REALLY want the booda dome!!!! but i can’t buy them in the pooey uk!!!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH

pants , pants, and more pants!!!!
The Booda Dome

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!?!?!!!!
i want one too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think ive seen something quite so mad, ever!! All we get are dog kennels shaped like igloos. I think us Brits should get on the case of Booda Domes!!!
Well i have had nothing better to do today (its pi**ing it down in good old blighty-nothing new there then!!) so i have been looking online, and i found them in 3 colours! yes count them 1, 2, 3………… but nowhere ships internationally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spacehopper if you have better luck, don’t keep it a secret!!!
I am also willing to sign any petition to get one….possibly two of this seasons must have poo tray!!
So near and yet so far…………..

I know!.. KEEP LOOKING I’VE FOUND 4 glorious colours of ramped loveliness!!!! I could literally have a stomping feet strop at this point. lol
Hello
Well I didn’t realize that my litter box with ramp would cause such an international crisis! Hmm, I had no idea it would be hard to get one over there in the UK. It is a cat litterbox, so keep that in mind when searching that I have not found one with the rabbit supplies, and I’ve always found them in the larger pet stores or online in the cat section. I was thinking that maybe i could ship one over – but I feel like the shipping costs would make it very expensive, but if you want I could look into that…
OMG YES!!!
i know they are quite big…. do they come apart? i’m just thinking i would like 2 (greedy i know) would they stack together if they were took apart??
owweee i’m so excited i could almost pee my pants!!!!!

Have you tried US Amazon? There are some people selling them on US ebay, sometimes if you email the seller and ask to ship international they will
I caught the boyfriend ebaying for one last night!!! No joy, nothing popped up anywhere near as nice as the Booda!!! If you would be so kind as to looking into shipping, i’d love you forever!!
(especially after waking up just now and seeing the satanic mess my two have left in the bedroom this morning after god knows what they must have been doing in their litter box in the small hours)
Hello – Well, I tried looking online, and unfortunately the shipping looks quite expensive. I’d be more than happy to send one over, Ijust don’t want it to be so expensive that is not worth it for you. Its about 35-61 dollars – yike! Maybe we should ask BB how she is making her test booda dome for her bunnies – that way you can make sure first that your bunnies would use this type of litterbox? I’d hate for you to pay all that $$ and then have the buns give it the bum treatment ![]()
Oh my test Booda…hahahha! Well, I haven’t done it yet, but WHEN I do, I cover the litterbox with a tall box, and if I’m so inclined, maybe make a litte cardboard entrance. I have my doubts they will enter regardless of hay in there, but I will still give it a go. I’ll keep you updated.
360 tour inside the Van Ness covered litterbox with Medusa:
ha ha, somehow that needed dramatic music to accompany the video. Medusa is prolly thinking “what the heck is that silly person up to now….. ooo this hay is yummy”
I love the munching sound! So cute.
oh no we were so near to getting a Booda Dome…..
My two lovlies already have a pink covered litter box, which they love to go in, but the Booda looked so fab!
Guess i’ll be waiting til they get over here….. i wonder if i could write to our prime minister about this outrage………
I’ll add my piece on your letter!!!!!
Poopy how you’ve made a little tear fall down my cheek, Medusa is absolutely stunning. Just like Saffy my childhood lopeared bun (but her ears were so long they trailed on the floor, my poor scuffed up girl). I love the vid, Medusa is TOTALLY unconcerned at what the mad woman is doing this time, looking up as if to say, "Oh god, here we go, she’s off again", not so much as a flinch as you go peering in on her camera in hand!!! lolol
I have a booda dome.. ive had one for about 7 months now. its amazing.
