So, as I posted last week – I went away for the weekend…leaving Coco in the hands of my husband and daughter.
Instructions were given orally and in note form. Cage was thoroughly cleaned, litter was fresh, hay was fluffed and ready.
As I left, I reminded him “She gets fiesty if she is lonely, so make sure you spend some time with her!”
“Hmmmmuhmmnmmm”
Saturday night, the call came.
Coco had broken THROUGH the barriers, gotten to her evil arch foe “THE SATELITTE CORD”, chewed through the black plastic cord protector and continued her chew job on what remains of the television cable.
The Margarita buzz I was nursing was instantly gone.
“Did you spend enough time with her? Was she lonely? ” These were not the words my husband wanted to hear. He informed me that she was caged and would remain so until I came back the following evening.
While I got a little bunny back when I got home, it was clear that one could not stay very mad with Mommy for tooooo long. Plus, I had picked up the box from Binkybunny that I had shipped to my best friends house in the States! And it had new chew toys! And the Maze Haven!
Monday Morning, Daughter was in shower, and I was assembling the Maze Haven! It took me about 15 minutes to make the two story version and Coco is happily ensconced in there. Last night, I cut up some fabric and made little “nesty” spots on the top floor for her to snuggle. I also abutted the Oxbow bungalow that she has been busily remodling up to one of the openings, so she gets some added tunnel and chew action.
I am hoping the “closed” in nature of the Haven will recreate what she loves about being behind the bed. I caught her biting the fabric I put in there ( which is FINE – as it is a fleece type and not prone to coming off in chunks) I am hoping that her illicit biting habit can be contained INSIDE the haven. I may make something root looking from hemp and tuck it in there so she can clear roots.
Coco’s job in the warren would clearly be #1 root clearer.
P.s. Beka – someone ( and I am not naming them) is warming up to the idea of the NIC cubes in his bedroom….
uh yeah. once the precious tv cord gets chewed, they usually come around. i’ve said before: bunny proofing isn’t about beauty, it’s about necessity.
mine love the maze. they can hardly get out of that thing. a few times in the evenings i’ve had to lift one end up a couple inches to persuade them to get out and go home.
Hahah yup!! ^^
Stubbon men!!
Dave got another hard lesson last week, came home and he’s moping and feeling sorry for himself that they got behind the couch to his speaker wire. I pretty much lost it on him as we’d just been through this and for the gazillionth time I’d offered to pay and cover all his cords in protectors-but he insisted tucking them under the carpet and putting *CARDBOARD* to block off the couch!!! ![]()

Needless to say their are NIC cubes there now and he knows full well if anything gets damaged it’s his own *^%# fault and I don’t want to hear it!!! ![]()
The more I hear about the Maze (and that lovely set up one member had posted a pic of with an NIC cube/Maze combo) the more I thin I may wind up with one. I just can’t imagine it will be durable to a chewer like Pip, she goes through cardboard the way a duck goes through water.
*sigh* WHY do men always have to take the hard way to enlightenment? >.<
Totally get the maze, they do a little ‘renovation’ but mostly hang out in there, even Rupret my big chewer. And you can throw stuff in there for them to chew!
#1 Thank god the forums are back.
#2 – Coco hasn’t done much chewing ON the Maze itself. I have set things in there for her to work on, so she seems more interested in chewing on those things.
What she HAS loved is a Hemp root thing I made with the oval punch outs from the Maze. I punched holes in the ovals and strung the thickest hemp I could find through them. I then tied them to the back of the Oxbow Bungalow ( to make it as if she needs to clear them to get INTO the maze) and this has kept her busy for three days. I keep re-tying them if she chews through them to make a bigger challenge.
I’ll try to post a picture, but I can’t quite figure out how to get them sized correctly…
The maze is awesome! Edson naps there all day every day in the exact same side and corner! He’s given up the cottontail cottage for the maze. BB – Can you make a “travel” size one?????!!!!! That would be amazing! I took the cottage to the bunny sitter when we went on vacation but now that he does not go near that I need a mini version of the maze. It could be half the size…
i’m gonna need to make a root disc. that’s a great idea Baleful! mine love playing with the raffia (sp?) twine that the willow sticks are tied up in. got to go to the craft store. you could even punch some holes directly into the side of the maze.
I am skeptical of raffia. :-/ Even though I know it’s what the straw mats are fastened with, my bunnies tend to tear it up and then leave it and it looks dangerous for an animal who cannot regurgitate.
Just how digestible is it? Has anyone ever heard of a bunny who choked on raffia?
I am not sure about raffia – but the hemp rope I have is pretty thick and cordy – I used it to fasten my clematis to the lattice at one point.
She isn’t shredding it as it doesn’t seem to shred – but biting right through..slowly. It honestly looks like roots.
For Coco, I don’t think Raffia would hold much challenge – One snip and it would be history. She seems to need to BITE through things.
We’re close onto five days of chewing ( and then me re-tying the knots) and her chewing again. The things she IS shredding is the Oxbow Timothy Bungalow.
Its a good point about vomiting, though.
i THINK the raffia is what BB ties up the willow sticks with… and she would not use anything that was not safe. i keep the BB paper tag on there too and they chew it all up.
lolz…I had to stop Fiver from chewing up one of the tags on one of my stuffed animals last night. I was doing something else while he was moseying on the bed for his evening out and all of a sudden I notice this “chomp-chomp-chomp”….”HEY! Don’t eat that!” Poor thing he jumped a mile! I felt bad. ![]()
As an update – Coco has not been able to bite the giant clear plastic plumbing tube –
And she guards the Maze Haven from the cat with authority. Le Chatte is not amused.
