› Forum › HABITATS AND TOYS › The Jellyfish… new toy
So I’ve looked at a lot of these toys that everyone has come up with and one day I had an idea of my own. I call this The Jellyfish, you’ll know why by the picture. All you have to do is take a flat piece of cardboard, you can cut off one of the sides of an old box if you have one. Using either a pair of scissors, the tip of a knife, or a really sharp pencil depending on the thickness of your cardboard; poke a bunch of holes in the cardboard, just scatter them about. Then take your local newspaper and shred it into inch wide pieces going down, the long way. Take one of the ends of the shredded paper and twist it until it’s thin enough to fit through the holes in the cardboard. Continue until you have enough pieces of paper hanging. Put a hole in the center of 2 of the oppossing ends and tie a string through the holes to hang it. Then hang it in a doorway or somewhere low to the ground where your bunny can chew and run through the "curtain". My rabbit loved this, I made it about a month ago and she’s still playing with it. The best part is, once all the paper is pulled and ripped off you can just rethread it and it’s brand new again. Here are a few pictures.

What a great idea, you should be BB’s toy specialist.
Thanks so much for this wonderful idea, CowieCow !
I made two of these last evening whilst hubby was watching the Superbowl (yuck !) and hung them in my baby Isabella & Rambo’s cages. Izzy went running through them immediately and periscoping checking it out & Rambo starting ripping the paper and eating it, LOL ! So they were very well received, hehehe
Thanks again for this great contribution ! I have 3 more to make for my other bunns ;o)
Tami
That looks like fun! Really great idea.
Oh what a great toy idea! I’m going to have to try that! Thanks CowieCow!
I made one of these and put it in the tunnel that I have. . . . So far Henri and Acorn have ignored it but Mercury loves it!
Great idea!
what an adoreable pic of mercury!
and a fabulous toy idea! i love it! going to make some tonight for sure. i have a mountain of cardboard to cut down & a mountain of newsprint for recycling… might as well use some for cool free toys
ok maybe silly Q but… where do u guys get all of the cardboard from? the only cardboard i can get is from toilet rolls.. i wouldnt even know where to go for boxes and stuff :S i wouldnt even know where to go if i was moving.. help?!
Well I get all my cardboard boxes from work, mostly just to make toys for Cowie. The piece of cardboard I used though for this actually came from a package of construction paper, sometimes it will come with a piece of cardboard just for structure support ya know. But ummm…. you could probably go to your local grocery store and ask them for boxes, you know they through out a ton everyday.
thanks i will give that a try!
hmm that does look really fun, going to have to try that for Mr Floppy.
Mercury looks very content there with the toy, cute pic!
Around here, the liquor stores stack their boxes up every week for people to use. Try popping in a liquor store and if they don’t have any out, just ask!
I LOVE the idea of making an ‘octopus’ in the tunnel!!!
i got a box and cut holes in the top and then put paper through that so its like a jellyfish house! hopscotch loves it!
oh now that’s a cute idea too! it’s a jellyfish bonanzaaa!!! lol
her’s a pic of my lazy-cage-jellyfish. baby loves it. gotta put one together for the pinkster too.
hehe your bun is cute!
This is a great idea. I would love to put this in the HomeMade ToyTest Section I’ll email you.
What a fab idea …. gotta try this one on Luey.
And I will make one each for the piggies and hang in their cages.
hopscotch loves his little house jellyfish thing lol
Garsh…I just read my earlier reply to this post; combined with my other suggestion to get paper bags from the liquor store… now don’t I look like the lush LOL …but seriously bunny toys are made at liquor stores!! Brown paper bags and cardboard boxes LOL
lol… *high pitched voice* alco………. hehe jk
I made a version of the Jellyfish. We call it the Jellyfish Cave. I poked holes in the top of a box and threaded the newspaper through. Booker LOVES it. She like to hid in side and pull in the news paper! Thanks for the great idea !!!
Welcome BookerTRabbit!! I’m so glad your bunny loved your version – the Jellyfish Cave! We’d love to see pics! But even if you didn’t get pics, be sure to stop by the lounge and introduce Booker! We want to know what she looks like and what she is like in general.
Aww That sounds soo cool!! Thanks for the idea and Welcome to Binkybunny!!
That is such a good idea! I’m going to make one for Stuart today! He is a little nervous since I just got him yesterday so mabye having something to do will calm him down a bit.
DancingDiva – let us know how it Stuar likes his Jelly Fish!
Sadly Coco didn’t go for it. She seemed suspicious of the whole thing…although La Chatte looked hopeful that something tasty might emerge from the newspaper tentacles.
I took it down after four days.
Some day I will find a toy she really likes….
I’m going to make one this weekend! As for a potential place to get he cardboard for this – the punch outs from the maze haven are very much octopus sized!
Ohhhh – I have moved it to a new place…and it got a second look. I have not yet given up hope…..
Do i see a stunt bike in the background? Haha!
looks great, I’ll try to make one (:
I made one for Archie….gosh he is so hard to please! He sniffed it and pulled a piece of newspaper down and ate 1/2 of it and that was pretty much it.
I did try something else….I took a few of the pieces of newspapers out and I put parsley in the holes. He ate it but I didn’t get to see him playing with it.
I’ll have to make some for my boys, that looks really neat.
i just love this toy! and so does my bun! he had a great time helping me build it and chewing it up! haha! i hung it in his hutch and he thought it was super fun!
Anyone else’s bunny just sit underneath and eat the newspaper? I can’t help thinking all my hard work went to waste there!
my buns love the jellyfish too!! yay!
hey my rabbit loved it i put some hay in the holes as well as news paper with sum carrtos she loved it
the bunny car wash! LOVES IT
I made a dig box today with the jelly fish idea before they get into it. They are both flop right now so Ill have pictures and an update later.
Hello Binky bunny user
My bunny Nala 2 loved the jelly fish but she doesn’t like
carrots i think she thinks they stink does anyone esle have this problem
also my rabbit is wild aand like to huimp the hay why do you thinkl this is
please help me fellow bink bunny user
I don’t have a place where I can hang it from, but I saw the cute pic of the paper hanging from the inside of a box. I just realized I have a carton that paper towels came in. I can just use that to hang the strips of newspapers from and I can cut out a couple of doorways so Tweakers can come in or out with. Excellent ideas Ladies!!
Hi!! Tweakers wouldn’t eat carrots at first either. Try this, get the petite baby carrots in the small bag from the vegie area in the grocery stores. Rinse them with water first and pat them dry. My daughter’s bunny won’t eat it unless we get the “store/bag” smell off of it. Their noses are very sensitive. And you might need to get your bunny fixed. Talk to your vet about the humping.
Very cute! I love the idea and will probably try to make one for my Luna this week after she settles down into her new home.
so it is safe for them to eat news paper i seen a picture of a bunny eatin and shreeding a phone book is that safe to for them to eat?
im thinking about gettting my rabbit fixed is it a pretty safe thing cause they stress so easily i dont want anything to happen to her have u had yours done ?

Most newspaper ink is soy based these days and that’s okay. But if you are in doubt, it is always good to double check with the newspaper company you are using the newspaper from
Helloworld!!
I made this for my rabbits last night. I hung it in a doorway, sorta like a beaded curtain. My rabbits seem to be afraid of it! They just stare at it for a VERY long time before attempting to run through it. And when they finally do, I’ve never seen them move so fast.
Success with the jellyfish but on the wall!!!!!!!!!! =)
