The hormones have arrived!!

Oh, no… they’re heeeere! I knew it was coming, but I never expected such an abrupt arrival. With Xiao Pang and Calypso, they both became unbearably hormonal gradually, but Echo has gone POOF – HORMONES! She has been a litter box star since the day I got her; today, she pooped all over the floor. AND, and this is the one that worries me… she has started to hump Calypso incessently. I heard a scuffle in the living room, so I went out and there she was, going to town, with Calypso trying to get away. Nobody has been hurt, and there are no hard feelings as of yet. Calypso is still happy to snuggle and eat with her, but there have been multiple mounting attempts. I don’t want it to progress to the point where somebunny gets hurt. What do I do? Should I separate them until Echo’s surgery (scheduled for Nov. 5th)? I was expecting this to happen, and I’m glad it didn’t happen sooner, but now I’m really worried and am nervous leaving them alone together. I don’t want to separate them if there’s no need; and yet, I can’t watch them all the time…

I would separate them whenever you aren’t there, at least…

I’d recommend you separate them when you’re not around if they seem like they are really starting to get antsy with one another. If they do have a bad scuffle, one or both can become badly injured (sometimes even requiring an emergency vet visit and surgery to repair the damage…)

Another option would be to see if the vet has an opening sooner and can bump you up a couple weeks (assuming she is old enough and the vet is comfortable operating now…)

A bad fight can actually hinder future efforts at getting them to re-bond… bunnies can have long memories for things like that.

That was a great idea, Beka. I called my vet and asked if Echo could have her operation sooner than originally scheduled, and the vet says that it is safe to operate now. So… Echo is going in for her spay on Wednesday morning. Yay! But also… I’m starting to worry! I was a wreck when Xiao Pang had her operation. But then again, my vet here in Canada has years of experience working with bunnies, so there is much less risk than there was in China.

I think it’s normal to be worried about our babies getting surgery. I know that Freya needs to be spayed, and I absolutely will do it. But my stress about it made me put it off an extra few weeks. We’re supposed to be going in next month. I know that the sane and rational thing to do is drop her off and get on with my life as normal til she comes home the next day. I’m pretty sure that the only thing that will keep me from calling the vet’s office about a million times is my husband. I also decided that since she stays in the living room that I will be sleeping on the couch with her for a few days to make sure that she seems ok. So, yeah, being freaked out and worried is probably something we can’t avoid even though in our heads we know that everything will be fine. Good luck Echo!! Be a good little bun for the vet.
