The gardener’s foe? I think not!

One of the great things about summer for us rabbit owners is the sheer amount of unwanted plants, everyone’s a winner. Here is Autumn munching some weeds and various grasses, one very happy rabbit . Make sure you can identify what plants are safe if you decide to take cuttings/ pruning’s.

Blue Moon- thank you, yes a slightly chubby one that thinks every time I come in the room I bear treats I felt bad coming in empty handed so cut those for her

Q8bunny- ha, she certainly acts like a queen she was very flustered when I had to rescue her shortly after making this thread, she fell off the bed while dozing off and got wedged between the bed and wall, letting me know with a thump that I hurt her pride after I scooped her out. Poor thing though, she cut her foot slightly and bled but thankfully it seems to have healed fast, will keep an eye on her.

sarah- do you have relatives near by that have a garden? if you do they’d thank you for taking out the weeds for sure, I don’t actually own a garden but help out my folks with gardening.

Oh, and on that note, LED grow lights are becoming less expensive and can run at wattages as low as 5 watts and still grow things like grasses, dandelion, vetch, clover, plantain etc. indoors if you don’t have much natural light. My mum has a garden but it’s mostly pebbled, although there is some edging where some weeds might lurk! There are always cats in the garden tho and the occasional hedgehog so I’m not sure how safe they’d be? Me and my partner are looking to move to a place with a garden hopefully soon *fingers crossed*

I’d love to grow things indoors, I’ll look into that. At the moment the buns get dried dandelion and plantain but I’m sure fresh would go down a storm

I have all sorts of weeds that I pick for my bunnies. In winter they get loads of chickweed and some dandelion. The rest of the year I pick dandelion, clover, wild strawberries, and plantain. They love it. I do wait for the clovers to flower in order to distinguish between them and Oxalis (poisonous), and I’v noticed that the clovers grows in the yard, and the oxalis grows in the rocks that I laid as a flower bed. I also have a pasture seed mix that I grow I containers. Apart from weeds – I grow different veggies for them in season.

Sara- there are cats in the garden I pick from, unfortunately. I wash everything thoroughly and have done for years without incidence. I figure if it had pee on it she’d smell it and not eat that piece.

Vanessa- your buns are very lucky! we also have wild strawberries, they are neat for being so small there’s no danger of giving too much sugar and the leaves can be picked virtually year round
