        Hi there , it’s been a while since I lat posted .

Ever watch that movie “The Fly” Scary stuff, if it were ever to be real.

I as of recent have flies circling my rabbit and cage.

Beginning of the week was still about 1 or 2 flies , but now wednesday, it seems more that 10 to 15 .

Where the heck are they multiplying in ? Where are they coming from. Are they harmful to the rabiit.

Well don’t really need answer to last question because I won’t tolerate any bug to live in my house.

Please tell me how to get rid of the cause and problem , or tips i’m sure you will give.

        Thanks

I sidenote: can any of you recommend forums where I can ask detailed vetenarian questions ?

        Thanks a lot again

eeew the fly   and flies.could it be that some juice from fruit or vegie got on their newspaper or litter?  a good wash and clean of the cages and play area might help they are attracted to food smells. and mayhaps some fruit or vegie juice got on the bun itself.   flies can be a health hazard for buns.   bot fly. they put larvae in a wound on a rabbit or a dirty place and as the larvea hatch it goes under the skin of the rabbit and can eat them alive making them really miserable. nasty stuff.

not sure what you can do around the buns. every year i get little fruit fly type things in my houseplants. they are tiny and very annoying. i’ve found the best remedy for that situation was leaving a cold, half-empty coffee-cup (after i was done drinking it) next to the plants. the flies would be attracted to the sugar and end up drowning in the coffee. in 24 hours i could catch about 20-30 little flies in there. really nasty, but it worked. after a week or so of doing that everyday they would be all gone.

i don’t think anyone hear recommends a forum for real veterinary advice. there is no way to know who is answering your questions, and what kind of real experience they might have. you can definitely ask questions on here, but your best bet is always your vet.

Are the flies you are seeing flying from one point to another, landing often on the ground or on surfaces, or are they buzzing and hovering in the air?  The buzzing/hovering flies are called Cluster Flies and are not dangerous for your bunnies.  If the flies are landing on things like manure, they could be the bottle flies that cause fly strike in rabbits and are very dangerous!

that i don’t know.  i drink very, very sweet coffee (with both sugar and flavored creamer).  you could try the sugar water but i can’t guarantee it’d work.

Interesting….I have a problem w/ grain moths.  My downstair’s neighbors often buy rice by the bags…I’m talking 20 lb bags of rice.  About a year ago they had a major grain moth infestation.  The moths eventually moved up to our apt.  To this day we can’t keep dry goods w/o getting moths.  We had to through virtually everything out and washed all our shelves down w/ vinegar (I read that this will kill grain moths).  It’s still a nightmare and I purchased fly swatters…if anyone has any bug suggestions for me as well I’d appreciate it.

Another thought are these the standard black houseflies?  Or are these those smaller black fly bugs.  The black fly bugs are often found in drainage and/or sewer areas.  They can come up through your sink or shower drain.  My mother in law had a huge infestation of these for years.  They came in through the washer drain in the basement.  She finally hired a plumber to come out and they found a small crack in the pipes that lead to the city’s water dept pipes.  It cost her lots to repair.

What kind of veterinary info are you looking for?  Something Dana Krempels can provide? or in depth vet information?

Do you need to find a vet? I think it’s best to ask vet questions about your particular rabbit directly to your rabbit’s vet.
