Sooo…in a few days our local valley state fair will be starting. We’ve only gone in the last few years that we’ve been here.

I am not looking forward to it…if only that I am afraid I will see bunnies languishing is despiable conditions….and want to take them all home! >.<

Anybody else have state fairs coming up around this time of year?

we had ours 3 weeks ago…thats how i got Pepper because we dont have petstores or shelters near here with rabbits…so i went to the fair, found a breeder during the rabbit show, and bought Pepper for ten dollars! lol he offered me a pedigree but i would have had to pay more for it so i decided against it, but thats how i know hes a pure bred holland lop.
i felt so bad for the rabbits at our fair, they were in a shelter, it wasnt even a barn, just a picnic shelter, in wire bottomed cages waaaay too small for them and it was sooo hot, and when it wasnt hot it was storming that week, so im sure they got really wet with the crazy winds and rain

I always feel bad for the piggies and chickens too they can barely move!

We have the Royal Show in October … lots of stalls, dressage, craft stalls, entertainment, rides etc.

Many breeders from all over Western Australia show their animals .. they are judged and ribbons etc are presented on the best animal … however, their living conditions are very good here … all animals are extremely looked and most are taken home at the end of the day.  The Show runs for two weeks.

We have a few fairs but not many … there is the markets which are on every weekend … I have seen some baby bunnies bundled into small cages and sold for $15 .. I generally don’t go down to the markets otherwise I get myself into a tizzy seeing them in such appalling conditions.

our county fair is coming up next week. i haven’t been to a fair in years (a decade or longer?) but we’ve decided ot go this year. it’s not easy to find family things to do that are less than 40 bucks, so we’re looking forward to getting out, taking Michael on some rides, and playing games. i might or might not go look at the bunnies. i’m not sure. i guess it’ll depend how i feel that day.

Oddly, I felt the opposite about fairs. The last time I went to the Los Angeles County Fair, I was probably 14, and I had pet rats and birds and fish at the time, and I took horseback riding lessons, and I LOVED seeing the horses and all the different rats who were obviously so much better treated than the ones I was used to seeing at the petstore. At the time, rats were considered nothing more than snake-food. And at the fair, there were breeders and owners showing them who loved their rats as pets and friends, and there were crazy colors amd styles (blue and lilac, hairless and dumbo-eared) that you would never see any place else.

I didn’t got to the LA fair again until last year. And in the meantime, all the animals and crafts and competitions were replaced by stall after stall of infomercial type products. It was truly a disappointment. I wonder how children will learn to love the more exotic creatures if they never see them loved by other people…

Maybe the LA Fair was initially different because it’s LA, and we’re a bunch of city-folk and tree-huggers…now our fair has just become a huge exercise in commericialism. You can find 20 ways to clean your floor, but you can’t see more than 1 goat… (I do love goats! I couldn’t fit one in a 1-bedroom apartment, but OMG they are so funny and cute!). I miss the goats and the rats and the rabbits, too. I never had the idea that the creatures lived in their “show” cages for longer than the couple days of their showing at the fair. All the breeders/showers I talked to when I was 14 were very clear that the way the animals were kept at the fair was temporary, and that the animals should be kept in much different circumstances normally…ie, if I were to purchase one of their babies. I think that’s the responsible thing to tell a 14-year-old at the fair, isn’t it?

                        Luna

                        Elvis

I can’t find a pic of Solei, she’s the one pregnant-same type as Luna, but white with come fainter colors on her back. Elvis is the daddy and he’s off to get neutered. We should have baby goats in a few weeks!!
