Well, I myself am very happy with the bunny set up as it is. I like having the pen area because it’s really easy to clean. I thought that the buns would like that space too because it would make them feel more like they were out with us. Well…not so much. I’ve noticed since adding the top condo and switching the buns around each night that they both prefer the top one. They both like the levels and the jumping and the closed off areas it seems. Whichever one is in the lower pen area always seems bored and annoyed. Tucker will just sit there and stare at me when she’s in there. They both do. Whichever one is in the lower pen will sit and stare at me right by the door. They just glare at it like “open this now!” I thought that it was just because they wanted more out time but I don’t think so anymore. Whoever is on the top one runs around and plays and hops from level to level and just really doesn’t mind not having out time. I usually have to coax the one in the top level to come out and play during out time!!
So now I don’t know what to do. She won’t be spayed until later this month or early early next month. And then there will be another month of healing/hormone settling down before we even START bondong..so forseeably (spelling?) this set up could last quite a while. I’m not sure if I should take the pen apart and turn it into a matching type condo of the other one or if I should just let them be miserable every other day while they’re in the lower condo until they’re bonded. I really don’t want to destroy the pen itself because I think once they are bonded it’ll be nice for them to have that option of coming down where they can easily get pets and stuff. But for now, it’s just so sad to see their little faces when they just sit there mad.
I don’t know if there is something that I can do to the lower pen for now to make it more interesting or something maybe? I try to keep a lot of toys in there, and they have both tile and rug that they can choose to lay on. They have a big litter box, straw mats to rip up, I just don’t know what it is. I think it’s that they like being high and I don’t know a way to easily make the pen high in one area. Ugh I am way too bunny whipped I think!
U,. this was the same as with Charlie & Layla. For some reason they both wanted to be in the top one and would give me the death glare every time one of them was put in the bottom. My solution was to extend the bottom bit slightly with an xpen so that they had a consolation prize of a bit of extra space outside the NIC condo.
Can you split the cages down the middle vertically? I have had to do this when my two were fighting and it worked well. Or would it be just too difficult to do that with your set up?
you could make two matching sides, or you might compensate by allowing the one in the bottom to have extra runtime that day… it’s not a perfect situation, but REMEMBER… it is temporary… your set-up is much better than the buns being in small petstore cages…
Last night we had an issue with the HUGE rabbit box house in the kitchen, it was taking up too much space so I chopped it in half. THe back lower box was half eaten anyway so it had to go. I took the back top box and wedged it into the top shelf of the lower condo. They LOVE it. Now they seem to enjoy the lower pen just as much as tehy do the upper condo. I think they’ve also realized that the top condo has it’s advantages…more levels so more jumping spaces but the lower pen has it’s advantages too…it’s open so they can get more pets instead of just nose rubs and they have more wide open play space. Tucker’s been really naughty lately when she’s out so unfortunately she only gets out time in the kitchen now unless we’re in the living room actively paying attention to her. She’s been nipping at carpet and trying to push herself against the gates so that they pop open. I REALLY need to get her spay done because she’s been out of control lately.
Tuckerbunz – I hate to tell you, but I believe the bunnies have you bunny-whipped
Its OK – I am too, but don’t try lamenting to people like your co-workers about how your bunnies guilt trip you when one gets to be in the taller cage because they will look at you like you are crazy
Anyways, as someone who does understand the bunny guilt trip, I’m glad you found a solution!
^^ ROTFL Sooo true!!!
Moo – you are too funny, that is so true!
Maryann began charging me last night when I was around the condo. I couldn’t figure out why. I checked all the usual things – she was getting pets, I wasn’t going after her stuff, she had plenty of food. So I decided everytime she charged me, I’d back up and see what happened. She’d approach me, move a little either to my left or right and then charge again. She never hit me but ears were back and I think I heard some grunts.
This went on for a couple minutes until she backed me up against a low bookcase that is next to her condo… and has the raisins on it. I took a couple out, gave them to her, and she trotted away, pleased as punch.
I SWEAR I’m not making this stuff up. I really do think she’s not a rabbit.
I’m so glad I don’t have one like Maryann! I’m sure you love her, but she’s a little freaky… I’d be scared to go to sleep in the same house as her! Wake up some morning with her sitting on your chest staring at you, and have odd thoughts in your brain that you don’t understand and can’t explain… Poltergeist rabbit! (Polter-rabbit?)

that is so funny, markusdark! She’s not a rabbit, she’s a border collie and she herded you right where she wanted you….
LOL that’s funny. Tucker is more passive aggressive then Maryann. If she wanted something she’d just give me the evil stink eye until I figured out what she wanted. Drue’s also pretty passive aggressive, but he prefers bunny butt to the stink eye..something about the lop ears just don’t have that same ferocity when giving the stink eye!
lol Markusdark… I have to admit… when the local HRS volunteer yesterday pointed at the 2 dutch bunnies they needed fostered (after I volunteered to foster) my immediate thought was “Oh my gosh! I can’t handle buns like Maryann!”
Luckily (since I of course took them home anyway!) they seem nowhere near as demanding (or terrifying!)! ![]()
Yet, Bob…Yet.
(As Coco the Tortoiseshell Dutch lay at the end of my bed and watches me)
yup… I’m beginning to change my mind… I am a little nervous about Twitch and what he’s thinking as he looks over at me… I “rescued” him from the second story of his cage (silly thing never thought to hop down on his own!) and he’s been running around NONSTOP for the past few hrs until I SHUT the door to the xpen… oh, he is not happy one bit at that… so yup, I’m a little worried now. I was hoping he would slow down enough for me to get a good shot of his coloring- it’s really cute half-dutch markings! It’s like he put on a little white shirt but only got it on halfway so his left shoulder and arm is white, but the right side is all black, except for his little white foot!… I’m pretty sure the cuteness is just to lull you into thinking he’s sweet… ![]()
Hahahah !!! I love hearing about maryann….she is so headstrong and smart! My next bunny (hahahah pooooor Dave….he’s going to miss me
) is going to be another dutch I just love their personalities…They are soo beautiful, even if they are planning world domination and our eventual demise!!
Yep, I’m definately getting a Dutch, I love clever animals, they keep you on your toes.
They keep you on your toes running for your life!! LOL
I think I actually saw Maryann blush this morning.
I’m not sure what she was doing, I only caught it at the embarassing part but I saw her fall onto her back from a standing position (as if she was periscoping and leaned back too far). She of course flipped right over but then noticed that I had seen her do this. She remained completely motionless, hoping that she’d blend into the background so I didn’t see her make her ‘graceful’ mistake.
