Upon the very cool suggestion in my other thread of creating a support group since many of us appear to be trying to lose weight, I’ve started the Weight Loss Support Group thread
So, you can do a little introductory post (who you are, how old you are, height, how much weight to lose, how you’re doing to do it, goal dates, etc) and we can support each other and check in weekly with numbers or whatever
So me…

Weight to lose: 40 pounds
Goal date: May 1, 2008

i took bootcamp classes for the last 2 1/2 years in a small class lead by a fabulous personal trainer. but since i am trying to pinch pennies at the moment, i’m following a couple of mock-bootcamps in my rec room with the dog. i’m no personal trainer but if anyone wants a real basic calorie blasting work out that you don’t need lots of equiptment for, let me know & i can post it. it’s basic but def not for whimps and can be adjusted to what ever your fitness level is!
This is so funny because I JUST started a new health program. Thebestlife.com and so far it is working well. So I am also in! Thanks for starting this thread.

Weight to lose: 50 pounds
Goal weight: 145
Goal date: However long it takes for me to get this off in a healthy way – so I am guessing by June or July.
Diet: Thebestlife.com weight plan. Biggest change – finding other things to do than that evil snack habit. I use snacking to relax and as a boredom buster, so I have to find things that will replace that. My friends recently taught me knitting, and amazingly, I have found that to be extremely relaxing. I also draw, so I could get back into that.
Exercise: Starting with a mile walk, and increasing back to my old walks/runs of 5 miles. Strength Training 3 x a week (I’m also following the exercise program on bestlife.com so we’ll see how it goes.
Also for those of you who don’t want to list how much weight you have to lose – I know some of us can be sensitive about it, you can just tell us how much weight you are losing as you go.

Goal date: end of 2008
Diet: cut back on snacks, drink more water, eat more veggies
Exercise: start slowly with a goal to get back to doing yoga 3x wk and maybe bellydancing
A year ago October I got a horrible case of bronchitis that took more than 4 months to finally clear up. It sent my asthma totally out of control, and we didn’t find the proper new med regimen until July. I was pretty much unable to exercise at all for all that time – walking on a hill or stairs caused severe wheezing and coughing. I started slowly becoming more active over last summer/fall -I’ve gone down a pants size! - but I slacked off again once winter came.
I have all the tools to do this – vids, mat, experience – I’m just awful with self-motivation.
Will Power feels like lifting heavy weights. My best friend just came back from her vacation in Europe and brought me and my husband the most gorgeous delicious chocolates. I said to her “THANK YOU, and I immediately told my husband to eat what he wanted right then, and then hide them, HIDE THEM GOOD!! So he did. I figured out where they were (I’m very good at sniffing out chocolate) but he made it so they were literally out of reach and no way for me to get them. Good Man! I later had two small pieces for dessert. That was it, and back up to the unreachable hiding place it went.
Then when we went out to pick up some basic stuff from the local market, my best friend (who doesn’t have to lose weight) came with us, and she kept leaning towards the desserts and bakery. I stayed back and found an excuse to meet her on the other side of the store. I don’t want her to feel like she can’t have anything fun. I just am a snack addict. I was shocked at how difficult that actually was. I mean I did it, but when I walked away it seriously felt like I was dragging a ton of bricks. I knew I loved snacking (always have, but never had a weight issue until the last few years) but I never realized I was soooo attached to my snacks.
I have found that my husband also has to curb his enticments. He doesn’t have to worry about weight so without thinking he’ll ask if I want a bite of his dessert or whatever sweets he’s having. I give him the stink eye, and then he’s like ‘right, no, gotcha” Lately though he hasn’t brought any sweets into the house, so it shows me he’s even giving up his vices to make it easier on me.
So, so far right now, when that little voice says “just a little chocolate, or one thing isn’t going to make a difference” I shut those thoughts off and refocus. Maybe once I create a new habit of less snacking then those little things won’t make a big difference, but right now, I just have to move my mind and body forward into a new habit and it really feels like strength training for the mind. But so far, I’ve been able to lift off those temptation moments. It’s really hard!
Good luck to all of you! I have the opposite problem – I have trouble gaining weight right now! Blessing and a curse because people tend to give me crap for being skinny, but I can’t help it! I’m sick so it’s 10x worse!
i love chocolate too binky bunny… but i can eat it in moderation. i wish i could say the same about chips & fries & cheese & toast with lots of margarine. anything salty basically. i know i shouldn’t eat salt (high blood pressure) and so i never cook with it, hence the cravings. i had to fast 12 hrs for a blood test at my last physical & i couldn’t believe how hard it was to not eat anything after dinner. good grief! if i cut that out i’d be off to a seriously good start.
so far so good tonight. i had to shovel snow for 1 1/2 hrs which kept me from over-eating supper AND i’m counting that as my exercise thank you very much!
digx… wouldn’t it be nice if we could switch problems for a bit just to even things out?
I never really was a “snack addict” until recently. I think for me, I have to rethink my schedule because it is difficult. I have never liked to eat brekfast ever. Now, I don’t eat until 2 maybe 3 in the afternoon because I teach from nine to 1. I get home about 2 or 3 depending if I have to meet students or have meetings. Then I have two or three hours in the afternoon to eat lunch and get ready for my evening classes. I come home and eat dinner around 10:00 pm.
I don’t eat that much, but I find myself snacking on things I shouldn’t just because. In the last few months 20 lbs has kind of snuck up on me. Last year I lost 20. This year I gained it back.
ugh i have been ill all week which has gone quite well for me because ive got at least 40-50lbs to lose so it has helped me on my way as i havent eaten since saturday and so the lbs have dropped off giving me a great kick start and i bought an excercise thing which is going great for me so im just hoping my will power holds out for another few months at least – stupid sweet cakes and…. mmmmh ….hehe
The last 2 days I’ve gotten off the bus a few blocks early and walked the rest of the way home.
Hey – it’s a start!
I’ll join up with y’all, too – over the past few months I’ve put on quite a bit of weight, and hopefully having support will help me with my willpower & accountability. After going through some personal tragedy over the holidays (My father passed away unexpectedly in December), I’d lost any ambition to get healthy, when it should have spurred me to take better care of myself. Now my doctor’s on my back about high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being obese, and I know I can’t do it alone.

Weight to lose: in total, 130 pounds. For now? Whatever I can do.
Goal weight: 135
Goal date: It will probably come off very slowly, but I want to work on losing 40 pounds by June.
Diet: I am putting together a modified South Beach Diet plan for myself.
Exercise: Now, I’m trying to get on the stationary bike 15 – 20 minutes every other day. I also walk 1-2 miles a day. Again, I know it’s a slow start, but I am so out of shape, it’s not even funny.
Wendyzski – Good for you!! I’ve been walking to destinations that are just short drives. Every little bit helps!
Staja – I am so sorry about the loss of your father! I could see how losing weight would be tough during this time. My husband’s mother also passed very suddenly in the month of December (not this past December) but the holidays can be difficult because of that. I wish you the best in your healing process. Just take one day at a time. I know the first part is the hardest because who wants to cut back on things you enjoy when you are dealing with inner pain, but over time your body will get used to it, and it not only helps with the health issues, but it can help you deal with stress better too, and exercise actually increases endorphin levels which can lighten your mood.
Holly – I too am terrible about waiting to eat long. And I’ve heard that our bodies actually store the food quicker because we put ourselves in a starvation mode of sorts. I gag at breakfast, but I have found that if I force myself to just take a few bites of something light, then about 20 minutes later my stomach kicks in. Not full throttle, but enough to sort of get down a bowl of cereal.
