I’m here writing this on 1 hour of  sleep. Stormy had one of the worst statis scares he’s ever had last night.

He was fine all evening and then about 10;30 pm was lying down, shaking terribly and thus began a terribly scary (and expensive) night.  I immediately started doing my home statis remedies but they weren’t working as they usually do. By 12:30pm he had collapsed in his litter box and started looking worse and worse.  He was reminding me of my bunny Bean right before Bean died. Knowing I had to move fast I called the new 24 hour emergency vet and was glad to hear they treated rabbits (how much experience they had, I had no idea, but I had to take a chance). Thankfully the vet was extremely knowledgeable with rabbit statis emergencies (by then, I was already being charged the $170.00 appointment fee, pretty steep but I had no choice). She gave him fluids and a pain shot and wanted to keep him over night but I know Stormy and I knew that he would have a much better chance of recovering at home because he would be insanely stressed out there.

I brought him home and syringe fed him a pellet/baby food mix but by 2:00 I was terrified I was gonna lose him. He was laying in his litter box and I got so scared when he started having some runny poop dribbling out of his bum. I went to wake up my bf because I didn’t want to deal with it alone and when we went back he was washing his face. Then he started looking around as if he wanted something. I gave him some lettuce and there is no better sound in the world than what I heard : crunch crunch. And then as soon as he got sick, he was himself again. I’ve been stopping home all day checking on him and he seems fine.

It’s really frustrating not knowing why he got sick and why he gets this occasionaly, I feed him by the book. The bill ended up being $290.00!! but it’s comforting knowing this clinic is available.

          Holy moly! That is expensive.

There is always some underlying reason why a rabbit goes into stasis – has your regular vet checked him over lately after these episodes?

          I’m glad Stormy is better.

omg! What a night! I’m so glad Stormy is ok. I hope that when something like that happens to one of mine, I can be as clear headed as you are!

Thats so frightening! I’m glad to hear is feeling better now though. Have you considered looking into Veterinary Pet Insurance? It costs about 12 dollars per month (so $144 per year) and may save you some money if the stasis episodes with Stormy are so frequent. You may want to look into two things: 1) if they would consider stasis a pre-existing condition (I would assume not, I mean, it is not a condition…) and 2) what their coverage is when you go to an emergency vet.

I’m glad he is feeling better!

if they stop eating, their intestines stop passing food and shut down, leading to death.

Gastrointestinal Statis is common condition among rabbits and it can have numerous causes, sometimes it’s very hard to figure out what causes it, like in my case. It’s one of the top 5 causes of death among rabbits.

I strongly recommend anyone not knowing the symptoms and treatments to do research as being prepared may save your rabbits life as the first hours of a bad case of statis are often crucial.

Just an update: Stormy is TOTALLY back to normal. Begging for treats, terrorizing the kitten, the usual, lol.
