What temperature should Franz’s room be? We turned off the heating.

As an indoor bunny he would like it cool but dry and free from draft. Around 60F is OK. You can get him used to a little cooler even, but you’d want to do it gradually. I am not sure you’d do it though since it would be uncomfortable for you and you like to spend time with him.

Our house, at night when we’re sleeping, we have the heat turned off and it drops to around 61F – 64F, and the bunnies are just fine. They have soft bedding to get cozy in. Hidey Houses also help keep body heat in, but most of the time I see them snuggling up in a bunny bed near a window which is going to be an even cooler area, but they can leave and find a warmer spot if they so choose, but they seem to prefer that cooler snuggly spot.

Isn’t it pretty cold in Boston? I would think that you need to keep the heat on to help keep the pipes from freezing during the very cold nights. Unless you are wrapping your pipes pretty good.

Sarita, I thought Cactus was in an apartment building? If so, there would be some amount of residual heat from other units and I think the pipes probably wouldn’t matter since they are already maintained elsewhere in the building.

                Unless I’m wrong and you’re in a stand-alone house?

It really does depend…I had a client who lives in a condo and the condo above her the client turned off his electricity during the very cold months we had in Texas last year and the pipes burst so that is not always the case during frigid cold temperatures.

Oh okay… not sure how pipes and all that work… lol. So is there some kind of clause in the rental agreement that tenants CANNOT turn off heat in the winter? Otherwise the building would have all these tenants bursting their pipes because they’re trying to save a few bucks on utilities. I’m confused… lol. This is so totally off-topic but now I’m really curious!

I’m not totally sure about that Beka but I would think that you would be responsible for any damage due to your negligence. I know that apt. complexes always post about pipe freezing here in Texas.

I don’t know. I’ve never lived in an apartment. We couldn’t all fit in one, too much stuff, too many bunnies… lol.

Hehe it’s actually a really old house and we have 5 bedrooms; the top 2 floors of the house. Some other students have the first floor. We have the heat on “60” as it doesn’t actually turn off. Yes, it’s insanely cold in Boston. We’re about o have a blizzard tonight… 3 inches an hour… Franz’s room is probably 60 so I’m not too concerned. He is snuggling for warmth though. I’m going to buy one of those pet safe water bottles to put under his bed at night then I know that if he chooses he can sleep there. I just applied to get heating assistance… I just can’t believe the bill was that high :/

I imagine with an old house, the heating is ridiculous since it probably isn’t well insulated. What about a fleece cat bet for Franz too.

I know in our apartment complex there are signs posted to make sure the doors to the stairs are always closed so the pipes stay warm. The stairs are enclosed in heated stairwells, although last year a pipe broke on the other side of the building regardless. And thats just in Portland, not where it gets super cold!

One of my apartments in the Berkshires was a converted Duplex house. Very old. Radiators with keys to turn on the water to drain them so they wouldn’t freeze. Very annoying. It wasn’t a good idea to ever turn them completely off. I think you’re bunny is fine above 60 degrees, but you can also put a fleece blankie in there to snuggle as well. Maybe line the bottom of a hidey house with a blankie.

Actually, I let him play in his pet carrier and it has a fluffy fleece bottom. I guess he could sleep in there if he wants. And no he doesn’t chew anything

Bunnies can handle what we can handle- temp wise.  As long as there are no sudden drastic changes he should be fine.  If he decides to sleep in his carrier or in a box that will keep him warmer as his body temp will warm the small area also.
