Layla’s behavior has been TERRIBLE since she got spayed.  She’s been biting (without provocation…  even when I’m just sitting on the floor) and growling.  I didn’t even know bunnies could growl.  The doctor discontinued the antibiotic because when I took her back in to the vet on Monday, she said that it wasn’t an infection afterall but an allergic reaction to the glue used on her belly.

It could be from the spay but the vet says she shouldn’t still be in pain and that she doesn’t wince when you touch her belly, which she would if she were in pain.  But she’s mean…  I”ve read that this is supposed to go away after alteration but it never existed BEFORE alteration…  honestly, kinda regretting the surgery on a lot of levels now…

Even though she was spayed she is going thru hormone fluctuations still- it takes about a month or so for things to settle, so I would give it some more time.  I know it is hard not to take things personally when a bunny treats you bad- I don’t think they realize how much it hurts our feelings to have our beloved bun be such an evil snot!  But the spay and removing the uterus and ovaries is causing hormone changes- so that could be the reason for such crabbiness.

I think once things settle you will be so much happier and she will be too.  I am so pleased that with some bunny proofing I am able to let my buns run supervised on 2 levels of the house with no accidents or damage (well, if there are any poop accidents the walking vacuums/the dogs take care of those ASAP).  Before the spay I would never have been able to do this- Cotton was a huge bully to the cats and peed on stuff without close supervision- and even then she peed but at least on a controlled area/pad, but I had to watch her like a hawk.  She seems mellower now.

I agree, I’m sure it will calm down in a few weeks.

If she’s charging and growling in the mean time, try this:
Hold your hand a few inches off the ground in a ‘c’ shape, as if your catching some water. They usually interpret this as ‘can I groom you’ and calm right down for nose rub.

i agree, give it time. be very consistent with her. even tho she had surgery recently, at this point, if she’s growling or trying to bite, it’s okay to exert your dominance by pressing her head down for several seconds. if she does nip, let out a yelp.

I’m sure she’ll calm down as soon as she’s 100% better. How long has it been since she’s had her spay? Daisy was just spayed 2 days ago and she seems as normal as before exept she growls when I try to pick her up to check her incision. My male was the same way I just took it as he was still mad at me for taking away his “man-hood” but about a month after he was fine.. Hang In There

Hey, when I was spayed (hysterectomy and overies removed) a few years ago, I was mean for a while, too!

Davita, I got my bunny TigerLily spayed on Oct 30th, and she was with a sitter for the first few days since i had to go out of town. When I got back i was afraid she was no longer my sweet girl as she boxed at me and was generally upset. She would not let me grab her out of the cage like she used to and I thought I had lost her forever

On Dec 1st about a Month after her spay we got a 360 degree turn around! Tigerlily sat on the couch with us and even placed ehr head under my hands so i would pet her (she never did this before) Now everyday she wants pets and affection from us, she loves to cuddle on our laps when we watch tv and nap with me and my husband on the couch! Spaying was the best thing we ever did for her! I am sure your bunny will come around.
