Teeth Grinding

today i noticed that one of my bunnies is grinding his teeth, and seems to not wanna run around so much today, i dunno if ive scared him or hes decided he doesnt like me? he had a check up last friday andhis teeth were fine not overgrown. does anyone know why pip might be grinding his teeth? hes only 7 weeks and its starting to worry me

When does he grind his teeth?

Grinding teeth can mean the bunny is in pain or it is feeling good, eg. when you pet it. So it depends on the situation really.

Molly does it when she is snuggling by herself…she does it right before she falls asleep and it is quite loud. It is a sign of real enjoyment in her case. And otherwise, they do it when I pet them and they are enjoying it.

He’s only just started doing it. he was just sat down in my room grinding his teeth for a about 4 secs at a time every 10 – 15 mins and its pretty loud. he doesnt seem his normall self. and im worried hes not eating should i take him to the vets?
I got him and his sister 2 weeks ago

A loud grinding is a sign of pain.  If he doesn’t seem his normal self AND he’s not eating, then you should take him to the vet.

When my bunnies grind their teeth for pleasure (esp. when I’m rubbing their cheeks!) I can’t hear the sound, but I can feel the movement and vibration. If you can hear it… that definitely sounds like it classifies as “loud” and he should be checked out. Of course, “normal” for bunnies will vary, so it may be normal for him… but it’s good he’s going to seen… just in case.

Just got back from the vet and Pippins been hospitalised. He basically has really bad constipation the teeth grinding was a sign of pain poor baby. The vet said it was a good job i noticed it early. thankyou for your help

Im not sure, they giving him pain killers, something to stop his blood from getting infected and something to help getting his digestive system back to normal. Thankyou, i hope hes ok will keep you updated!

Just spoke to the vet & He said pips still not eating or pooping, there waiting for the medication to kick in. The next 24 hours are crucial. I Hope he’s strong enough to pull through!

I’m so glad you were able to get him to the vet pretty quickly! You’ve done a great job to get him the vital care he needs. Sounds like he’s in good hands from what you describe and they are keeping him comfortable with pain meds and trying to get his gut going again with gut motility drugs, etc, etc.

Oh…i’m so sorry. You did the best for him and I’m so sorry he did not make it. Rabbits can be so mysterious this way sometimes. Even my rabbit-savvy vet said it’s part of having a rabbit. You can do the very best for them and sometimes there is no real reason as to why they can’t seem to pull through.   Sounds like you helped him pass peacefully.

A side note: if he was purchased from a breeder, you might want to give him/her a head’s up about his passing. It’s unfortunate that they are selling bunnies at only 5 weeks old, when for their health and well-being, they need to be with their mother until 8 weeks old. With baby bunnies, 3 weeks make a huge difference for their digestive health. I’m not saying early weaning caused his death, but I can guarantee that it did not help.

Thankyou very much For Messages and Hugs. Im Sure Pips Happy In Bunny Heaven. Im off to see some bunnies tomorrow as merry needs a new friend as she seems very lonely. Thankyou for all yor advice, i will be sure to binky Bunny if i have any future problems

i agree with Beka’s point that it did not help to sell him at such a young age of 5 wks. BUT, this was not your fault.

Just got Hoppy like 2 weeks ago, and not long after that about a few days ago she started getting loose motion, took her to the vet but hasn’t been herself since,,
She still keeps grinding her teeth and doesn’t eat properly, the vet suggested giving her her pellets and hay, and also gave an oral medication for 5 days but her appetite doesn’t seem to inprove 🙁 really upsetting
