It struck me that a water only hydroponic garden with a plastic grate above it could be made to go into Buttercups crib. It also seem like it would create another cool spot.
What types of grasses, herbs and other plants can I put in it as free choice?
I found  the seed that sifted to the bottom of a bag of timothy is viable so that is going in.
How about ryegrass, bluegrass, wheatgrass, side oats and switchgrass?

Only by being able to say “Yeah, that’s enough variety” will I bother to further develop the idea.

rye, blue and wheat grass all sound ok. You could try water cress, carrot tops and orchard grass too. Free choice? Meaning Buttercup could access them at any time? I’m not sure this would be ideal….1) they’d be polished off in the 1st instance – lol and 2) she may eat this rather than the hay. The hay is more important as it is indigestable fiber that keeps the gut moving.

If you could somehow partition it off so it has a chance to grow, it would work.  Nice idea and the plants would keep the air clean too!

I would be careful with the free choice as too much grass in the diet can cause GI upset and a rabbit to neglect their normal diet. I also wonder if it would grow fast enough because I think a hungry rabbit will readily nip the tips off before blades get to grow. I would also be a tad concerned about the stagnant water underneath – mostly about mold as it is toxic to rabbits and you really don’t want that kind of habitat around a rabbit – albeit a very cool idea.

Eating it before it could get a good chance to grow could be addressed with an access door.
Cropping the plants to low would be taken care of by placing a reinforced plastic mesh about 3″ above the seeds so she could only eat them down to the mesh.
The water shouldn’t stagnate because the system will will be an ebb & flow.

As long as the water flows enough times a day in conjunction with a UV sterilizer and weekly water changes, mold and bacteria wont become an issue. Hydrogen peroxide at about 1 tablespoon per gallon is also a safe method of destroying and preventing mold and bacteria.

So it looks like I’ll be growing 99% timothy, ouch! Ether pay $56.00 plus shipping for 50 pounds or $6.50 plus shipping for 2 ounces. Maybe I’ll luck out and find it local.

Even if you have an access door to the garden to allow for growth- if she can enter the garden and chow when you allow her you might end up with more in the system than you had planned for.  Most bunnies seem to like to poo when they are eating- so that might be an issue.

I am planning on planting a garden for my bunnies this spring- but I will do it outdoors and harvest the herbs so I can control the amount that they are getting.
