The house has seems so empty since we lost Quantum.  I made the mistake of checking the local animal welfare site and….they’ve got 2 2-month old male Hotots.  They’re brothers who were left, abandoned, on the doorstep of the agency.  We’re still in the “thinking” stage (well, Mike-the-Practical is.  I’m more, “Let’s go!!”) since there’s a couple of lionhead youngsters at the Humane Society 25 miles north of us and they’re singletons.

So…..can anyone give me the run-down on Hotots?  I’m not sure if these guys are dwarves or not.  It’s hard to tell in a picture where there’s no sense of scale.  The living-room is big enough for two full-sized guys, so I’m not too worried.  What are their personalities like?  Will they remain bonded?  Both (if they come home) will be fixed as soon as the vet gives the go-ahead.

The other that caught our eye is a young lionhead/Jersey Wooly mix.  What kind of brush do you use?  They make a point of saying he’ll have to be brushed.  This one’s a single, 4 months old and already neutered.    Beyond everything else, we both miss having a housebun to love.

I’m not sure about either breed, the lionheads and woolies do require more brushing. Bonds are tricky, there is no guarantee that a bond will last thru the spay/neuter surgeries. Have you looked at any older buns (1-3 years old is a good age to start) that are out of the adolescence stage and already bonded? That would be the easiest and you can see what their “real” personality is like.

I think they have Hotot’s in both standard and dwarf. The dwarf is supposed to weigh in about 3 pounds the larger i’m not sure maybe around 6.
Mine was oversized so she was about 5 pounds. Once she was fixed she was very sweet.

The lionhead x would need alot of grooming. But, two would be better than one they can keep each other company.

            Good luck deciding.

I use a Furminator on my pair of shedding machines. They are dwarf lops though, so I’m not sure if it would work as well on your breed.

The Hotot/Jersey Wooly questions may be moot–a third bunny has entered contention! A 4-month old, neutered gray lionhead who’s described as a “lap bunny” who “likes to lay on you and watch movies.” I’ve been emailing the young lady fostering him and am waiting to find out how the whole process works. Yay!!

If  a lionhead is not shedding you could go 3days on the grooming.  I have gotten in the habit of everyday since they started their shed.  The shed has ended and I find myself still doing the brushing.

Hairbuster is a great tool.  You can search for it online.  I ordered mine with a check sent to the P.O. Box.  Person is reliable.

Yeah the lap bunny sounds nice.  Hotot are cute too.  The biggest I saw was about 6 lbs.  They have a nice personality I hear.

Owning 2 lionheads well I am definitely partial to the lionhead lap bunny.   The grooming really isn’t all that big a deal.  It is also a good way to spend time with your bunny.  Perhaps giving a treat when you are picking him up for grooming and done with grooming.  Mine got trained that way.

Well, foop! This last weekend, I was emailing back and forth with the person fostering one of the Humane Society buns I was interested in. I wasn’t going to be able to head north yesterday, so the young lady was going to take him back in Monday and I would be in this morning when they opened to see him. He wasn’t there. I checked my email yesterday and again before I left this morning and no word of change/delay in plans. The head of the small animal section thinks it’s probably a combo of “the teenaged busies” (the fosterer is a young lady) and that she doesn’t really want to give him up, though circumstances are such that she can’t adopt him.

And while I’m understanding and all, I’m still bummed. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a brighter, bunny-ish day. And I have the word of the small animals section head that she’ll either e-mail or call me if said bun isn’t there. Sigh.

Oh…well good luck. It is hard for some to foster. I can’t be a foster either. It takes a strong person to say goodbye because in the end it is the best thing for the bunny to find a forever home. So hopefully the Humane Society will help this foster do what is the best thing for the bunny.
