Sometimes Thumper will “talk” (that is of course to say move her mouth as if she’s talking) while she grooms, and sometimes she does it while she’s not grooming.  The cutest is when she cocks her head up like she’s trying to talk to the ceiling.  My mom’s become obsessed with getting her to “talk talk talk” and any time she sees Thumper she’ll say “talk talk talk!”, convinced Thumper will move her mouth at the command.  Sometimes it even works!

Anyhow, my question is why she moves her mouth around like that.

does it look like she’s chewing/moving her mouth from one side to another?

Huh no idea….that’s a stumper for me. Does she make noise when she’s doing it? Has she had a vet exam since you rescued her (maybe it’s teeth probs).

I hope it’s just quirky-dutch and not teeth probs

Only thing I can this is she’s chewing on delicious cecals.  Or has hair stuck on her teeth.   Sorry - less than charming reasons for something that must look cute.

I would be suprised though if she has learn to do it on command. She is a dutch after all.

The vet said she’s perfectly healthy.

She does it whenever she’s eating her cecals, but she does it more often than that. It’s the same “chewing” motion she does whenever she’s having her yummy cecals, it just happens more often than that. I was thinking maybe it’s hair stuck on her teeth too, and she’s trying to gulp it down or something.

It is very cute, especially when she cocks her head up to do it. =) Sometimes I even mimick her and she goes even higher, standing up on her hind legs. Maybe I’ll get a video or pic one of these days!

You know, I have seen Jersey do it a bit when eating something dry or stringy or too quickly. They can get strands of things or hair catching on begginings of a molar spur I think. As for Queen Thumper doing it whiile standing on 2 legs – that’s weird and funny! Yes, you will have to film her!

Are dutch rabbits usually quirky and slow to learn tricks…? That would explain why every time I try to train her she wanders off after a treat or two and does her own thing… lol… she’s a clever little thing, though, always finding ways to get in places she shouldn’t be!
