Taking Harry for walks

 So today I decided that it would be nice to take my little bun outside and see how he likes it. I currently don’t have enough money for an xpen so I was looking for a harness and a leash since Harry is a little on the larger side for his breed (Mini Rex). He’s about 5lbs and all muscle so he’s pretty big. Anyways looking at the small animal harnesses, they didn’t seem like they would be big enough and they were kinda insulated like which could be too hot since I live in Florida. I decided to get a kitten harness and then get one of the leashes that extend. 

He didn’t mind me putting the harness on and once I got him outside he was a bit confused but realized it was the perfect opportunity to explore and run about. Now that he’s running, keeping up with him is kinda hard and occasionally he will be snapped back. I’m going to take back the leash and get a longer one so he has more distance but I wanted to know if it was okay that he would occasionally get snapped back. I know rabbits mid area is pretty sensitive which concerns me but I don’t know what would be the better option. Should I just keep what I have or attempt to use the rabbit harnesses even though they could potentially overheat him due to his thick fur and it being Florida? Thanks!

Overheating isn’t the big concern with harnesses the “snapping back” is pretty dangerous. Harness are not recommended in general because if your rabbit gets scared and/or runs against the leash too hard the “snap back” can LITERALLY snap his back.

Personally, I would ditch the harness idea and save up for an x-pen.

If he is being snapped back, then he’s probably not the kind of bunny that can be leashed (some rare buns are mellow and even when spooked, will not bolt). Rabbits can break their backs easily when on a leash.

I agree with the others. Harnesses are too dangerous to risk IMO.
