I just made the switch a few days ago, my mom has a few bags stock piled in the garage for her horse….and I helped myself. Hehe! They are so amazing. I liked carefresh because they didn’t track it anywhere. The shavings stick to them and they track it all over my room. But carefresh is so expensive for how much I use because I have 4 boxes in my room and I change them everyday…that’s a lot of carefresh….or a lot of shavings mess. SOooOo…wood shaving pellets!!! OMG!! They are wonderful and cheap and work so well! I am in heaven!!! Even little snotty Bun is using them!
Wow. Good for Bun
Moose only ever uses one corner of his box, so I save a bit with that
Monkey goes everywhere in her box, but she loves her carefresh so I’ll keep getting it for my Overlord.
Lol! I’m just all about saving money right now, gotta put more away for Bee’s spay in 2 months and just saving up. I might be taking out a loan too soon for a french horn that the horn players of the San Francisco symphony play on, my parents are going to co-sign for me and I’ll owe my soul to the bank for 10k. I’m super excited, it’s gonna make a huge difference …I just gotta be careful with that extra money that I don’t go on a shopping spree and buy out the BB store instead of getting that horn!! lol :p
Holy crap 10k for a horn? O.o Have fun with it!
I use YN for litter and I have been thinking about the wood stove pellets, too. I wonder if they are that much cheaper than YN. I’m going to go look that up right now. Good luck with your new purchase – maybe you could just get $11,000 and have a little mad money
. Please don’t listen to me – I’m a total enabler when I’m talking about someone else’s money, LOL
Okay, just answered my own question: The wood stove pellets are cheaper than YN.
WSPs are AWESOME!!! Did you see my other thread a couple months back… I spent $51 on a YEAR’S WORTH OF LITTER for two buns!!!!!
I’ve been useing the wood stove pellets for 4 years now and wouldn’t use anything else. I actually use the brands for ‘horses’ but alls the same. $4 to $5 for a large bag that lasts me over a week for 8 bunnies.
Plus it’s compostable, not to sure how well the paper product ones would work for that.
I’ve never used carefresh for my bunnies litter, but have for my small critters homes. I used to use it many years ago before i found corncob bedding, and find the paper products smell quickly. I have a degu in my living room and i find I have to clean his cage much more often with the carefresh then i did the corncob (and stove pellets mix). I’m sorta a freak when it comes to ‘smelly’ animals spaces LOL… and i have a lot of critters.
I spent $51 on a YEAR’S WORTH OF LITTER for two buns!!!!!
I beat you beka, I spend about $36 a year
Also I found that the WSP do track a bit and that is why I decided to use a grid over my litter
Yup, Becka I got the idea from you! Then my mom brought some home and it just fell into place!
I use wood pellets specifically for horses for my bun. I have two horses also. I don’t know if it’s the same for bunnies, but with horses you should never use “wood stove pellets” which ARE different than compressed wood pelletized bedding. Wood pellets are MADE for animal bedding, wood stove pellets are not.
I’m curious, I know it’s been asked before but…some woods are not good for bunnies if they should chew on them (pine particularly)…what is it again about the wood stove pellets that works as a bunny litter and has no toxins?
I use a cheap cat litter Its newspaper that looks like its been all smooshed up and rolled into pellets so when she’s using her box she can chew too
she only uses the back corner of her box so this stuff lasts me forever!
Mimz, it’s beacause of the way the pellets are made – they’re dried out in the process so any of the oils/aromatics are completely removed. If you’re intersted…. http://www.ozarkhardwoodproducts.com/fuel_manu.html I use the Ozark “Wood Pellet Fuel” for mine.
CocoaBee… maybe youre thinking of the difference between plain wood pellets and the “fuel” pellets with an accelerator to make them burn faster. The accelerants are a no-no for any animal since you don’t want to expose them to the chemicals, but as long as there’s nothing but wood in the pellets, it should be fine. I don’t want to make a call on the pellets for the horses, but I do know that it’s fine for bunnies ![]()
Well my mom’s had horses since she was 13, so I’m sure whatever she bought is fine for horses. It’s just compressed wood in a pellet…no chemicals/oils or accelerators. Lol…I don’t think my mom wants Opie to make a bonfire in his paddock!
And….introducing No Oposition “Opie” and my mom
He’s 1/2 Quarter Horse and 1/2 Paint Horse. I think I’ve posted photos of him before?
Look at those baby blues! He’s so cute and he loves my mom so much! She bought a ton of those pellets for his bedding, I haven’t been up to see him lately to see what they are using at the stables…I think just shavings, so my mom likes adding to it for more urine to be absorbed and more cushion!
Barbie, that’s right. You need to get untreated wood, or wood pellets withOUT excellerant. There is a product line called Equine Pine, which is the same company as Feline Pine, that makes their pellets especially for litter, not wood stoves, so I would feel more safe with those.
Pine gives off an odor which can be toxic over time and continuous use, but those used in litter remove those so they are much safer. I tried feline pine and it was fine. However, I learned Aspen pellets were no risk, so switched, only to have the manufacturer get into difficulties and now I can’t get my hands on those. Grrr. But they cost more than WSP or Feline Pine, so you probably don’t want them anyway. You can find Feline Pine really cheap at the grocery stores down here, and huge bags of it in the pet store chains. The pet stores might carry the Equine Pine pellets, too, if your mom is interested.
