› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Swelling after surgery
Hello to everyone,
Cookie had sterilization surgery 7 days ago. We had a laser yesterday and the day before that for the swelling in his testicles. The swelling in his right testis has gone down, but some swelling continues in his left testis. Is this normal, how many days does the testicular swelling continue and is considered normal?

Some swelling is normal, and it can persist for at least a week. Some bruising is normal too. It should gradually go away through. It’s good if you can take a picture every day, so you can compare the day-to-day changes.
If the testicle sack swells to the size of a ping pong ball, you should take him to the vet again. It might means there’s a leaky blood vessel that needs to be repaired. This happens occasionally, but it’s not common.
Laser is often good for wound healing.
Is he eating and pooping like he should? Does he seem to be in good spirits?
Yes, he eats and poops well. But it’s been exactly a week today since he had surgery. So I’m not sure how many days it’s normal to still have some swelling in his left testicle. 😐😐😐

It can take more than one week, just like swelling and brusing can in a human – but you should see it getting better continously.
It’s great that he has a good appetite! If you could get us a picture of the area, it would be helpful. It would probably require that someone else takes the picture while you sit and hold him against your body. (It’s best if you hold him, because he’s your bun so he trusts you).
If you smell the area, do you pick up on any kind of foul smell? Foul smell indicates infection.
Oh Bam, I’ve been devastated for a week. It will be long but I will tell you everything I’ve been through.
Cookie had neutering surgery on Saturday last week. the vet put a cone on his head because he doesn’t have a post-operative clothes in Turkey. And the cone remained on Cookie’s head for 5 days, was devastated. He couldn’t drink water by himself because of the cone, I woke up every 2 hours at night and gave him water. He couldn’t clean himself because of that cone and it got really dirty. He cleaned his eyes after the cone came out but his eyes were infected, probably because his hands were dirty. His eyes got red, we went to the vet he gave me antibiotic eye drops and eye drops for the redness. Normally my relationship with Cookie was very good, we slept together, we watched TV together, we were together 24/7, we were like partners. He is my son, but now he hates me for giving him eye drops 4 times a day and he keeps running away, our relationship has deteriorated, it hurts me so much. 😐😐😐After giving his eye drops, I give him little treats, talk to him, caress him, and he allows, but he no longer shows me the love and trust that he used to. It hurts me so much, I feel like my child doesn’t love me anymore. 😢😢😢
Keeping pets is not as common in Turkey, it is very rare to have rabbits. So most rabbit products are not available in Turkey. For example, even timothy hay is not available in Turkey, so I only give Cookie hay of meadow grass. I buy most of his toys and belongings from abroad for very high prices(because the turkish lira is so worthless). If I knew it was a post operative outfit for rabbits I would have ordered it 1-2 months ago from Europe. 😐
Now I can’t take a picture of Cookie but I will add it when I do.

I’m sorry you have had to go through this. You obviously have been doing a great job!
Most rabbits do forgive their owners once they recover, but it is very stressful both for you and your bun while it’s going on. You have to give meds, and a cone is often of need after surgery. It’s not nice for a bun to wear a cone, but it’s a lot worse for the bun to hurt himself.
A male bun typically goes through two weeks or more of “hormonal craze”. This is because the body and brain need some time to adjust to the stopped production of testosterone. The rabbit can become aggressive and start to pee- and poop mark. This will subside, but it can take anything from 2 to several weeks.
Meadow hay is great for buns. It’s a mix of many types of grasses. Buns don’t need timothy if they get other types of grass hay. Buns in Australia never get timothy, because timothy can’t grow there.
A post-op “jumpsuit” might not have worked. A cone is often needed anyway.
Çok teşekkür ederim, çok naziksiniz. 🤗🤗 Söyledikleriniz beni mutlu etti, doğru bir şey yaptığımı duymak beni mutlu etti. ☺️

Thank you very much you are very kind. 🤗🤗 What you said made me happy, I was happy to hear that I was doing something right. ☺️
Timothy hay doesn’t grow in the Mediterranean, after all, I’m Turkish and I’m from the Mediterranean. 😆 I mean, I had a very serious culture shock and style problem here at the beginning. We Mediterranean people are a bit fast, excited and sincere. 😆😆
I don’t know if we’re experiencing a hormonal breakdown right now. 🙄🙄Cookie made us sweat a lot. Ever since I started giving him drugs, he’s been avoiding me, constantly lying and sitting in corners. We struggled in sweat until we pulled him out from the back of the couch. When will this be fixed, it has nothing to do with sterilization surgery, right? Isn’t it because I gave medicine? 🤔

Hahaha 😂😂😂 Actually I write in English but then google page setting sometimes sends it by translating it to Turkish. I am writing in English, but after pressing send, it automatically translates the message into Turkish. I don’t experience this on any other site, only this forum does it like this, I don’t understand why. Thank you for re-translating the text and writing it for me. 😆😆😆

I don’t see anything alarming. Nothing looks red or angry.
Really? Thank you so much.☺️☺️☺️I’m relieved. 🤗

Cookie started to return to normal. But there is something. Cookie and I used to be like partners. But now he always moves freely on his own. He doesn’t show love and commitment to me like he used to. Will our relationship after sterilization always be like this? 😬😬😬

Well… he isn’t lovestruck anymore, if that’s what you mean. But that was just the hormones talking. Give him some time. Most bunnies go through a phase after their neuter where they exhibit undesirable behaviors and they can be a bit standoff-ish. Once the craze comes to an end and his hormones settle, he will go back to being his normal self. Just keep in mind that some of those hormone-driven behaviors might be gone. He may no longer obsessively circle your feet, for example.
I was waiting for Cookie to quit foot fetishism after surgery. 😆😆😆
But before the surgery we were very close with Cookie. We slept together, we watched TV, we played all the time, even when I was in the bathroom, he would wait for me at the door.. now our relationship is cold, he acts so maverick and doesn’t play with me. I also have to give medicine all the time, because there was redness in his eyes.
Is this really temporary? Will he sleep with me again in the future, will he watch TV?
Love for animals is the escape of human from human..
I agree with LJB10. This is temporary. It will take time for him to heal. His hormones will settle. (It can take 6 weeks or so). The hormones that were driving him to mate — which makes him circle and other behaviors that could be seen as play and affection may be less, but he seems very comfortable with you and will still like to get affection and be with you.
Helloworld!!
I hope. now I’m trying to get him to trust me again. 😐😐
