Sweet Meadow Farms Timothy & Poopy Butt?

Hi everyone- I hope this post isn’t against the rules- if it is I apologize. I’m not looking to bash Sweet Meadow by any means- my bunnies love their hay and I have one of their farms only 30 minutes from my house, so I go there often. But I’m curious if anyone else has had problems with their bunnies and the regular Timothy or Organic Timothy & Herbs. A while ago, another member’s bunny got PB after eating the Timothy from there and they had noticed that it was very “leafy”. Then I noticed the same thing about my hay- lots of leaves and other stuff in the hay- and BunBun got PB. So I just didn’t feed the Organic Tomothy & Herbs anymore, but still gave them the Sweet Meadow 1st Cut Timothy and the Sweet Meadow Hay with no problems. In fact, I’m still feeding it to them.

Then last week I got a bag of regular Timothy Hay from there, and it didn’t even have a lot of leaves in it, but BunBun got PB again after he ate it . Now Nelli is fine, so obviously it’s only some bunnies that are sensitive that react this way. I was just curious to know if anyone else had this happen? And also, has anyone heard of Canadian horse hay? It’s being sold down the road from me and I’m wondering if it’s something special. Thanks!

Have you had his teeth checked lately? Poopy butt can be a sign of dental problems.

When he was at the vet last year, they checked his teeth and they said they were fine. I think he’s just REALLY sensitive to crtain foods. I stopped giving him that particular timothy hay, but continued the 1st cut and meadow grass by Sweet Meadow and he’s fine! And he’s doing so much better now that he doesn’t get high calcium veggies- I haven’t seen any sludge in ages. The only time he has litter box problems now is when he gets poopy butt- then his bum gets sore and he postures when he pees. I feel so bad for him then- I just need to be really careful of what I feed him.

I think you are talking about me. I purchased this hay 4 months ago because it was cheaper and I got alot. With my disabled bunny kamdyn I have to be careful on the food that I do feed him. I have for years been purchasing oxbow hay when I recieved the sweet meadow farms hay it had alot of leaves in it. Which oxbow never does. Oxbow also has these things that look like cattails my bunny kamdyn just absolutely loves those and i actually didn’t find them in the sweet meadow farms hay at all. There hay wasn’t as greener. I am not here to bash the company I am just stating what i received. I personally will stick to oxbow because I like it. My bunnies did eat the same amount. I don’t know if while being on that hay it did cause kamdyns poopy butt because he is on metacam and is disabled so that might have caused his poopy but also. I did contact the company and they said the hay that has leaves is normal. I forgot to mention Kamdyn does have cancer.

I would definitely suspect a dental problem as well because their teeth grow constantly. It could be that with the change in hay your bunny isn’t able to chew it completely and that is causing the digestive upset. Seems a little farfetched, I know, but it happens all the time and many owners just aren’t aware. My own bunny needs his teeth trimmed every 6 weeks as even just a small spur poking side of his mouth causes him pain, chewing trouble, and extreme poopybutt. The worse their teeth get the harder it is to correct and the more out of whack their little bodies get. I compare the spurs or misaligned teeth it to a small stone in our shoe – bothers the heck out of us and once it’s out we feel great relief. Would you able to take your rabbit in for a check-up?

I would also like to reiterate getting him in for a complete dental check-up and general exam. Just like with humans, bone loss occurs as a rabbit ages. This can result in the teeth shifting and a rabbit who has never had dental issues previously, may develop problems when older.
