Since the question of low cost alternative litters seems to come up again and again, I am conducting a survey to see what wood pellets people have used for their bunnies and where they purchased them.  My idea is to produce a list similar to the ones about where to get NIC panels and coroplast.  I’ll start off:

I have used two different wood pellets as litter, both made by the same company.

Product: Atlas Ultra Premium Red Fir Pellet Fuel
        Manufacturer: Atlas
Where purchased: local hardware store and Orchard Supply Hardware

Product: Barn Dry Premium Animal Bedding
        Manufacturer: Atlas
        Where purchased: Scotts Valley Feed

I use Critter Country. Also, I noticed that Safeway sells a HUGE bag of wood pellets for $8.00. I purchase Critter Country from my rabbit rescue (HRS) for 9.00.

I was at the petstore today and saw that the wood pellets are way cheaper than the paper pellets (I looked in the cat section). Do they work as well? I will switch if they work as well or better. They just seem… so cheap… so I wonder how they hold up.

I use Feline Pine.  I’d LOVE to use the cheaper ones like wood stove pellets or horse bedding, but I live in teh city and they’re not easily available here

I use Woody Pet pellets; which are made in New Brunswick so not easily accessible around the country I don’t think.
A 13 KG bag costs $6.99 ($4 something with my store discount).

I bought 2 bags of wood pellets from the hardware store (Rona) but haven’t tried them out yet. Wendy, call some of the big chain stores like Home Depot or Lowes and see if they have them – with the number of people with those outdoor fireplaces and firepits, and indoor wood stoves becoming popular again, I’d be surprised if the stores weren’t carrying them.
